The Headlines Are Alarming!

"Insect populations are collapsing at unprecedented rates, with flying insect biomass dropping up to 75% in some areas over the past 40 years. Pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and moths face widespread declines, disrupting pollination services that support 75% of global crops and billions in food production. The North American bird population is down by 2.9 billion breeding adults since 1970, with devastating losses among birds in every biome. Forests alone have lost 1 billion birds. Grassland bird populations collectively have declined by 53%, or another 720 million birds. A staggering loss that suggests the very fabric of North America's ecosystem is unraveling." Cornell Lab

Come join the Shrewsbury Conservation Commission at the Shrewsbury Library, Friday November 6 at 7:00pm to view the film Homegrown National Park narrated by Doug Tallamy and join in the discussion of the many questions and issues that this film raises and the hopeful actions we can take as individuals to counteract the collapse of our ecosystems.

Dr Doug Tallamy is a name known by many. He is an entomologist, conservationist, and professor at the University of Delaware, whose work has transformed our understanding of the relationship between native plants, invasives, and wildlife. His research and many books like NATURE'S BEST HOPE and BRINGING NATURE HOME have inspired millions to come to understand that our own yards can be part of the solutions to a biodiversity crisis. Most conservation efforts focus on protecting what remains. Doug's research asks something larger: what do we lose when native habitats disappear, and can we restore what's been lost?
