Bring in the New Year with Green Mountain Neighbors!

After a year of hundreds of hours of planning and organizing, we are ready to actively launch GMN, a 501C3 offering services soon to seniors living in Mount Holly, Shrewsbury, and Wallingford.

Please consider becoming a member, volunteer, or both! Check out our website: greenmountainneighbors.org/ for information and opportunities to become a part of this important and rewarding program – helping our seniors to live-in-place in the homes and the towns they love.

Visit our website greenmountainneighbors.org/ to apply online (via our software program Helpful Village), or print out a copy of a volunteer or member application to mail in. Processing of volunteer applications will begin right away, but member applications will not be handled until sometime in late January. However, we encourage you to fill one or both out now.

Although we have already reached out to many in our communities, if you know someone who could use or be interested in our program, please share this information.

We are looking forward to helping our seniors have more comfortable and sustainable futures in their own homes.

Green Mountain Neighbors wishes you all a healthy and happy 2024

Vermont Native Publishes Civil War

Historical Fiction Novel, "War Tears"

Following many years of research, John Swanson, has published a new historical fiction novel dealing with a Springfield, VT young boy's journey into the Civil War, entitled "War Tears". The book, available on Amazon's Kindle, is sub-titled, "A Journey from Vermont to Gettysburg

And Related Stories".

The book details how a 16-year-old farming boy from Springfield joins the state regiments, initially as a fifer, later as a foot soldier, and the journey from being an innocent young boy to a veteran soldier who faces the enemy at Gettysburg. It details the conditions of military life then along with the medical care, or lack of it, the stubborn resistance of the Confederate forces he faced, and the coming of age of a man.

The author spent many years doing research on Civil War history at the Gettysburg Civil War Institute of Gettysburg College, enabling him to describe with accuracy the events that the Vermont regiments participated in during this conflict. He also researched the Confederate's military involvement which is plainly clear in the chapters dealing with the historic Gettysburg battle.

While romance is not the primary focus of this opus, Swanson does illustrate how the young lad became involved with a neighboring girl and how the romance was carried out while the boy was on the battlefield.

Using a flash-back technique, "War Tears" outlines how a Civil War veteran, once a young farmer from Vermont, recalls his experiences during the war, the effect the war had on the family, and its subsequent impact on future generations.

"War Tears" also contains several short stories related to both the war and its significance on future generations. One story relates how a Union soldier spent time with a Confederate soldier on guard duty, illustrating the common values shared by both sides.

Swanson, born in Springfield, currently living in the Gables in Rutland, VT, was a social studies teacher at Riverside Middle School in Springfield before retiring. He currently is involved in writing at the Gables. Information on both the book and the author may be obtained by calling 802-855-8883. The book may be downloaded from Amazon's Kindle Store.

Rotarians Thank Community for Support in 2023

The Ludlow Area Rotary Club thanks the residents and businesses of the greater Ludlow area for their support in 2023. Our club is a part of Rotary International which is one of the largest service organizations in the world. The mission of Rotary is to "provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace." As a result of your support, we were able to spread this mission by supporting members of our community and beyond. Our annual Penny Sale and Chili Cookoff were hugely successful allowing us to support local projects and scholarships. We support local organizations such as Mountainside House with grants for needed projects.

It might be of interest to the community to know some of the ways we have supported this mission both locally and internationally. This year our neighbors both near and far were challenged by major storms. After July's torrential rain and devastating flooding, Rotary became the fiscal agent for a collaborative effort with the OKEMO Valley Chamber of Commerce. In addition, we donated substantial money to the Ludlow Enterprise Fund, to Black River Good Neighbors and the Cavendish Family Fund. We quickly secured dehumidifiers that were distributed through the Ludlow Disaster Relief Center. Representatives of the club participated on the flood relief committee to assure financial help was distributed equitably.

To help with clean-up efforts after the flood, we contributed gear and a kayak to the Black River Action Team. Some members of the club went into the trenches, helping with clean-up efforts in homes and businesses. We also financially supported fellow citizens of our country who experienced devastating wildfires in Lahaina, Maui.

Outside our local area we provide support to Rotary International to help eradicate polio in the world. Rotary International is making great progress in this area and the world is 99% polio free. We also supported the Montreal Club in their efforts to bring water and sanitation to over 33,000 beneficiaries in Ghana.

We support an international student exchange program that places high school students in local homes for a year in a foreign country where they can immerse themselves in a different culture to promote world understanding. Annually, we provide scholarships to deserving graduating seniors from the communities we serve, Ludlow, Cavendish and Mount Holly helping them access post high school educational opportunities.

We are thankful for all the support from the area and wanted to share with you what your generosity can do. The Ludlow Area Rotary Club meets on Tuesdays at DJ's Restaurant in Ludlow. If you are interested in more information on the club or are interested in joining, please contact Kevin Barnes, Membership Chairman at (802) 228-8877, to receive an invitation to a meeting.
