Good evening,

If anyone would like apple mint--mentha rotundifolia such as that used at Perennial Pleasures in their tea sandwiches, I have a very, very large supply of the herb and also plants to share.

I would appreciate a recommendation for someone:
  • Who repairs stone foundations.
  • To advise re a few ailing trees.

Thank you.

Best,
Cecile Betit

"Parasite" Marks the Return of Movies to Heald Auditorium, Saturday, September 5

FOLA's first film since the Covid-19 pandemic started will feature the award-winning South Korean film, "Parasite". It will be screened in the Heald Auditorium at Ludlow Town Hall on saturday, September 5 at 7 PM.

"Parasite" is a 2019 South Korean black comedy thriller film directed by Bong Joon-ho, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Han Jin-won. It follows the members of a poor family who scheme to become employed by a wealthy family by infiltrating their household and posing as unrelated, highly qualified individuals.

Parasite premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where it became the first South Korean film to win the Palme d'Or. The film is considered by many critics to be the best film of 2019 and one of the best of the 2010s. It is also the 42nd highest rated film of all time on Metacritic. It grossed over $264 million worldwide on a production budget of about $11 million, becoming the highest-grossing South Korean film.

The Kims – mother and father Chung-sook and Ki-taek, and their young adult offspring, son Ki-woo and daughter Ki-jung – are a poor family living in a shabby and cramped half basement apartment in a busy lower working class commercial district of Seoul. Without even knowing it, they, especially Mr. and Mrs. Kim, literally smell of poverty. Through a series of scams and lies, they gain employment in the The Parks household.

The Parks are a wealthy family who for four years have lived in their modernistic house designed by and the former residence of famed architect Namgoong. While Mr. and Mrs. Park are all about status, Mrs. Park has a flighty, simpleminded mentality and temperament, which Min tells Ki-woo to feel comfortable in lying to her about his education to get the job. The new servants get rid of the hired help except for one, Moon-gwang, the Parks' housekeeper who literally came with the house – who knows all the little nooks and crannies of it better than the Parks themselves.

The question then becomes how far the Kims can take this scam in their quest to become their version of the Parks. The on-going efforts become a struggle within the household.

The movie is free and open to everyone; donations are appreciated. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, masks and social distancing are required. FOLA will supply water. For information, call 802-228-3238.

Vermont Home Gardener

The Great Tomato Race is On!

Rain or shine, our gardens are now heading into the home stretch with tomatoes leading the way!  Tomatoes are actually sub-tropical plants and don't know that winter is coming so they are still growing and producing as though they have many months ahead.  We know better and there are several things we can do right now to get the most out of what's left of this year's growing season for tomatoes and our other gardening investments.  But wait, there's more… Despite the calendar and shorter day lengths, there are still things to be planted for a fresh fall - early winter harvest.  Got yellow jackets? There is a non-toxic solution.

Vermont Fish & Wildlife Community Wildlife Programs online.

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department Community Wildlife Program is proud to announce the schedule for our Fall educational series of webinars and trainings. This year we've got five new topics planned and will be offering several sessions of each. Look at our schedule and register<https://anr.vermont.gov/content/trainings>.

Webinars:   1) Seeing Beyond Boundaries: Understanding Your Land At Different Scales,  2)  Woods, Waters & Wildlife putting the pieces together,  3)  Enhancing your Backyard, Back Forty & Beyond,  4) Wildlife Road Crossings, and  5) Updating your town plan for Act 171.

Trainings: In addition to our webinar series, we're also offering two trainings online this fall, NR1 Vermont's Ecology and Environment; An Introduction to Town Planning for Natural Resources. and NR2 Caring for Natural Resources: Taking Action in Your Community that offer a more in-depth look at this material with exciting hands-on activities and short presentations. Each training involves attending three live sessions (held online) and do a bit of homework between sessions to explore additional tools. This year, thanks to inspiration from a VPA webinar, we've put the course out on a MIRO whiteboard, so we'll be able to interact with the content in a shared space. We'll be able to map out concepts and see how they're interrelated and it gives us a platform to use anything from video and maps to other websites, pdfs and more. The training is a combination of short presentations, hands-on activities and role playing as well as exploring a few web tools (like BioFinder). See Trainings<https://anr.vermont.gov/content/trainings#Trainings> to lean more. Attendance is limited.
