Like Garlic? It's Time to Plant!

It's nice to finish fall gardening with planting.  Garlic is an easy New England crop and it's great to have something to look forward to for next year that's already in the ground when winter arrives.  Nothing compares with fresh garlic from your garden and now is the time to sow your garlic, along with many other bulbs that will be the first things up next spring.  Let's look at a few tricks to have a successful garlic crop year after year using science and some old-time knowledge.

Also, don't overlook the value of compost for your garden and yard.  Mower-shredded leaves plus kitchen wastes make a great compost and we have an abundance of leaves right now!  See details in the previous article.  Here's a new short video to help you get the most from all those leaves.

Finally, October-November is a good time to reflect and review what happened in your garden this year.  Take a walk and look around your yard & garden.  What did well, what didn't do so well.  Observe what your garden is telling you.  Make notes for next year.

Farm Life

We get asked questions every day pertaining to our farm, our farm life, and ourselves.  So, we thought we'd take a few minutes and answer some of the most asked questions.

WHAT TIME DOES YOUR DAY BEGIN?   Our morning chores begin around 5:30am.  Chores consist of feeding and watering the turkeys, laying hens and pigs and then moving the cattle into a new pasture.  The best part of morning chores ... is when they are done and the coffee is ready!

WHAT ANIMALS DO YOU RAISE AT YOUR FARM?  We raise meat chickens, turkeys, laying hens, pigs, and beef cattle.  Also have a couple of border collies and a cat!

DO YOUR FARM CHORES SLOW DOWN THIS TIME OF THE YEAR?  We don't necessarily slow down, but rather 'switch gears'.  Chores, like seasons, change, and some seasons are a bit slower paced than others.  I happen to love this season!

HOW MUCH FEED DO YOU USE IN A YEAR?   We've used about 40 ton (or 80,000lbs) feed this year.  Yowza!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS?  Plew Farm was started in 2011 .. so I guess this is our 10th year!

FARMING AND MANAGING A BUSINESS HAS IT CHALLENGES, RIGHT?  Yes, farming and managing our farm business can be challenging at times, but challenges give us opportunities to learn how to adapt and overcome.  Last year was a big challenge for us.  Along with the pandemic and panic shopping came inventory management!  And we are still facing challenges this year.  We continually see price increases in products like packaging (syrup containers), feed costs (up over 30% this year), fertilizer (the price tripled!).

Now back to business ..  Our farm stand will be open all weekend.  We've got a few pumpkins left - $10.00 each.  We'll have our fresh bread on Saturday along with a fresh supply of seasonal veggies.

Chicken, pork and beef await you!  It is definitely soup weather, and we've got the most amazing smoked ham hocks for that pot of split pea soup.

Reminder we are now closed on Mondays.  We are open Tuesday through Sunday from 12:00 - 6:00 and are located  at 1966 Healdville Road in Mount Holly.

Please be cautious and drive accordingly when driving in and out of our driveway.  Be on the lookout for farm equipment, dogs, other customers, and  grandchildren!

PASTRIES ON FRIDAY! ! !

Our croissant and pastry baker will NOT be baking on Saturday, HOWEVER, we are super excited that she will be baking on Friday instead!

So stop on by the farm stand Friday, and get yourself some of these amazing treats!  You will be glad you did.

In keeping with the coming Halloween celebration, FOLA will present the award-winning film, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" on Saturday, October 23 at 7 PM in the Heald Auditorium of Ludlow Town Hall.

Sleepy Hollow is a 1999 American gothic supernatural horror film directed by Tim Burton. It is a film adaptation loosely based on Washington Irving's 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", and stars Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci,. The plot follows police constable Ichabod Crane (Depp) sent from New York City to investigate a series of murders in the village of Sleepy Hollow by a mysterious Headless Horseman.

Crane, criticized for his favoritism of scientific methods, is dispatched to the upstate Dutch hamlet of Sleepy Hollow, which has been plagued by a series of brutal decapitations: a wealthy father and son, Peter and Dirk Van Garrett, and a widow, Emily Winship. Received by the insular town elders—wealthy businessman Baltus Van Tassel, town doctor Thomas Lancaster, the Reverend Steenwyck, notary James Hardenbrook, and magistrate Samuel Philipse—Ichabod learns that locals believe the killer is the undead apparition of a headless Hessian mercenary from the American Revolutionary War who rides a black steed in search of his missing head.  Ichabod begins his investigation, skeptical of the paranormal story.

What follows is the tale of how Crane investigates the crimes of the alleged headless horseman.   It is told in a vivid, yet often humorous, manner as only Director Burton can imagine and portray.

The film, rated R for its vivid depiction of the headless horseman's actions and a sexual scene, was awarded the Academy Award for Scenic Design.  The director and lead actors in the movie were also nominated for Academy Awards.

As with all FOLA movies, everyone is invited to attend and the movie is free; donations are appreciated to offset FOLA's costs.  Per the town's Covid-19 policy, all non-vaccinated attendees are required to wear masks while it is strongly recommended that those vaccinated also wear masks.  For information, call 802-228-7239 or visit FOLA's web site at https://fola.us.
