Summer Reading at The Library

The Summer Reading Program theme for Vermont public libraries this year is Color Our World. The theme reflects the idea that art "has the power to transform, uplift, and connect us. It allows us to see the world through different lenses, fostering empathy and understanding. The theme encourages libraries to embrace the beauty of art in all its forms, creating a colorful tapestry of experiences for everyone."

On Saturday, August 16 at 10:30 a.m. the Mt. Holly Library will celebrate its summer reading for kids with a workshop led by art teacher Casey Junker Bailey. Casey will introduce children to the colorful world of Henri Matisse as they make a series of bold collages inspired by the book Henri's Scissors. Come join us for a showing of the award-winning documentary "From Earth to Earth: The Lost Art of Dying in America" at the Mount Holly Library and Community Center on Saturday August 23 from 2-3:30pm

This short (20 minute) documentary describes natural burial and its benefits through stories from the people who worked to make it legal in Vermont, and the stories of people whose experiences have shown the ways it can help come to terms with the loss of a loved one and with one's own mortality. The documentary will be followed by a Q&A session led by Jim Hogle the President and Communications and Outreach Coordinator of the Vermont Forest Cemetery.

About the Vermont Forest Cemetery

The Vermont Forest Cemetery, founded in October of 2023, is the first cemetery in Vermont that is devoted entirely to natural burial. The cemetery is located on 56 acres of mixed hardwood forest in the Green Mountains above Roxbury, Vermont. The cemetery encourages families and friends to participate directly in the burial process if they wish allowing them to perform a final act of love for their loved one that helps deal with the grief of loss and with saying goodbye. It seeks to honor and preserve the stories of the people who are buried there, and to create a space where people can create art, engage in learning and research about natural burial and the forest itself, help conserve and restore the forest, or come and walk the trails to observe the birds and animals who live there, learn about the plants and geology, meditate, or just take a contemplative walk on the trails. We provide a regular schedule of guided tours in spring, summer, and fall. The cemetery is open to the public from dawn to dusk every day and we encourage to visit on their own at any time.
