FOLA Holds Canditate's Forum Oct. 13 in Heald Auditorium
On Thursday, October 13 at 7 PM, FOLA will hold a candidates' forum in Heald Auditorium at Ludlow Town Hall.
The forum will feature all the candidates seeking the three Windsor County seats in the Vermont Senate. These candidates include:

Rebecca White - Dem
The candidates will be asked questions concerning all the issues facing the state and regions. Kevin Kuntz will be the Moderator with Jacalyn Diesenhouse as Timer.
Following questions from the Moderator, the forum will be opened to the audience for questions.
Ludlow Rotary Hears from Vermont Fish and Wildlife Game Wardens
Vermont Fish and Wildlife Game Wardens Tim Carey and Kyle Isherwood addressed the Ludlow Rotary Club at their October 4 meeting at DJ's Restaurant. As conservation law enforcement officers, they are responsible for enforcing State hunting, fishing, and trapping regulations. They check for valid licenses and provide harvest reports to the Department. They are trained state police officers, training alongside them at the Police Academy. They serve as search and rescue teams, including working with trained dogs in those efforts. Several years ago, they were involved in a Cavendish search for a missing person that lasted 4 days at Knapp Ponds. They explained the search procedure which includes finding basic clues based on where the person was last seen, and then setting up a grid circle search in 1/2 mile radius increments. After searching the first ½ mile radius they move out to the next ½ mile, continuing until the person is found. Of course, the concern is that a mobile person might move back into a searched area. The dogs are of huge importance in an area where visibility is compromised, requiring the dogs to follow the scent. The duties of the job change with the seasons. Summer time focuses on bear nuisances, Fall hunting issues, Winter can include mountain rescues, Spring often fishing and boating safety. With bear issues, Tim and Kyle find people are the problem more often than the bear. Since they serve to protect wildlife as well as humans, education on proper storage is often required. Bears need to eat a years-worth of food in 6 months. If a bear can feast on a dumpster, chicken food, or bird feeders, it is a much more efficient source of their needed calories. Bears learn quickly so UVM students are working with trash haulers to develop bear proof containers for distribution, especially in bear habitats. The Department of Fish and Wildlife encourages ethical hunting. Baiting with apples or salt is not allowed. Additionally shooting from motor vehicles is prohibited, nor can you have a loaded long gun in your vehicle, or hunt after ½ hour after sunset. Often people get tunnel vision when they see a deer or bear, resulting in accidents and violations. Kyle and Tim talked about successfully rescuing the moose on the railroad tracks across the Black River in Cavendish a few years ago. It involved many organizations, took 4 to 5 hours and included calling the Railroad to stop the oncoming train. Vermont has about 40 game wardens in total; including 30 field wardens and 6 command officers, plus 4 others. Training requirements are rigorous and time consuming, and it is a 24-7 job. We have been gearing up all week for the holiday weekend and we invite you, your family and friends to stop on by.
The grandkids will be pressing cider on Saturday and they love sharing the experience with folks. Stop by and meet the grandkids, and see how the process works, and even take a turn at hand cranking the cider press. They'll have their cider for sale inside the farm stand too.
Our shelves are stocked as well with all things Vermont. Gift giving season is just around the corner! Hand crafted shadow boxes, canvas prints, mustards, hummus, honey, maple syrup, hot sauces and so many other goodies!
Fresh baked bread will be here on Saturday. And we will have home made apple pies (on Saturday)!
The grandkids also made a couch out of hay bales for those of you who like to sit a spell and have your picture taken during this amazing fall landscape!
Whoever is cooking this weekend, don't forget the meat! I've had my slow cooker in use all week .. beef stew, chili, chicken, and pork shoulder, just to name a few.
Don't feel like cooking?! That's ok too .. we've got some fresh ravioli and sauces to help you out. Or a take and bake pizza from Goodman's American Pie.
Well, I'm off to get some pies baked, the farm stand tidied up, and maple almonds packaged. See you this weekend at the farm stand!
