"Green Book" A Journey of Friendship and Understanding,

Next FOLA Movie Screens Sat., Sept. 16 in Heald Auditorium

"Green Book" is FOLA's next movie on Saturday, September 16 at 7 PM in the Heald Auditorium of Ludlow Town Hall.

Released in 2018, "Green Book" is a heartwarming and thought-provoking film directed by Peter Farrelly, starring Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali in the principal roles. Set against the backdrop of the racially segregated Deep South in the 1960s, the movie tells the true story of a remarkable friendship that transcends prejudice and societal norms.

The film centers on Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), an Italian-American bouncer with a rough exterior, who finds himself employed as the chauffeur and bodyguard for Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), a talented African-American pianist embarking on a concert tour through the racially turbulent South. As they journey together through a series of hotels, restaurants, and concert halls, their unlikely bond deepens, challenging their preconceptions and prejudices, while providing a poignant and humorous exploration of cultural differences.

"Green Book" received widespread critical acclaim for its touching portrayal of friendship and its examination of race relations in America. Critics praised the outstanding performances of Mortensen and Ali, who brought their characters to life with depth and authenticity. The film's humor, compassion, and ultimately uplifting message resonated with audiences and critics alike, making it a standout in the genre of feel-good cinema.

The film's critical acclaim translated into numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious Academy Award for Best Picture in 2019. Mahershala Ali earned an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Dr. Don Shirley, while the film also received Oscars for Best Original Screenplay. In the end, "Green Book" stands as a testament to the enduring power of friendship and the potential for change, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.
