Attention Landowners! SSC is offering a special event

July 20th at 9:00 am at 1049 Upper Cold River Road.

Have you wondered if there is something you could do to encourage better habitat for those threatened bobolinks nesting in your grassy field? Wondered how to manage your wooded land so that it supports habitat for more woodland animals like bobcats or bats? Have you read about the disastrous decline in insects and pollinators that not only provide food for birds (also in decline,) but are instrumental in spreading pollen to inseminate many trees, fruits and vegetables? Is there a way to help manage your land better to help our wildlife? Well, if you own some land, large or small in Shrewsbury, you might really like to attend the Shrewsbury Conservation's Commission's Walk and Talk with renowned biologist Andrea Shorsleeve, Private Lands Habitat Biologist with the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. Andrea will lead a woodland walk and discuss the land management methods property owners can use to improve habitats for wildlife species such as songbirds, bats, pollinators, and a variety of mammals. Come away with ideas on how you can evaluate how to best conserve or manage your land to help our wildlife and world.

Registration for this event is required and limited. To sign up please email Michelle Greene at michelle.a.greene247@gmail.com. Onsite parking will be provided, but carpooling is encouraged. Since this event will take place outdoors on dirt trails over hilly terrain, hiking boots/shoes, water, sunscreen, bug spray, and a hat are recommended.

Storyteller Event and Book Giveaway at Fletcher Memorial Library

Ludlow, Vermont – July 12, 2024 – The Fletcher Memorial Library is thrilled to announce a special Storyteller Event and Book Giveaway on August 2nd, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. This event, made possible by a generous Summer Readers Grant from the Children's Literacy Foundation (CLiF), is open to all children in the Ludlow area.

Award-winning author and storyteller Simon Brooks, hailing from neighboring New Hampshire, will captivate young audiences with a delightful storytelling session. Following the storytelling event, there will be a book giveaway, where each child in attendance will have the opportunity to select and take home two free books. This initiative aims to enrich children's at-home libraries and foster a love for reading.

The Children's Literacy Foundation emphasizes the importance of children choosing their own books, citing that this selection process enhances excitement and encourages reading for pleasure. According to a study by the International Literacy Association, 80% of students express a preference for books they choose themselves, highlighting the impact of personal choice on reading engagement.

The Fletcher Memorial Library has been an active participant in CLiF's Summer Readers program, dedicated to promoting literacy and providing enriching experiences for local youth. This upcoming event underscores the library's commitment to nurturing a community of young readers.

"We are thrilled to host this Storyteller Event and Book Giveaway thanks to the support of CLiF," said Sacha Krawczyk, Youth Services Librarian, at Fletcher Memorial Library. "Events like these not only encourage a lifelong love of reading but also contribute to building vibrant literary communities."

The event will take place at Fletcher Memorial Library, located at 88 Main St., Ludlow, Vermont. All children in the area are invited to attend and participate in this exciting literary event.
