Each town GOP committee must hold a caucus to nominate candidates from among their Republican voters to be listed on the November 3rd, General Election ballot to be elected to serve as Justices of the Peace (JP's) for their towns which is a 2 year term beginning February of 2021.
Town Clerks depend on JP's serving on their local Board of Civil Authority to help run the elections among other things.  It is important that responsible community members who are concerned about Election Integrity step up to serve in these roles.  It's also a good way for future legislative candidates to be on the ballot and serve their communities!
Some of the duties of the Justice of the Peace are mandatory and some are discretionary.  Mandatory duties are those duties which, by law, the Justice must perform.  These duties include serving as an election official at town and statewide elections, hearing tax assessment appeals and servings as a member of the Board of Tax Abatement.
Discretionary functions of the office include performance of marriages/civil unions, administering oaths, serving as a notary public, and serving as a magistrate.  Justices have the power to perform these functions but are not required to do so in any particular instance.
To learn more about being a Justice of the Peace, you can read the Vermont Justice of the Peace Guide at:  https://sos.vermont.gov/media/zaalj01/jp-guide-2019.pdf.
