Winter Gardening

Here we are… winter in Vermont with beautiful snow, cold nighttime temperatures, and there's still plenty to keep a good gardener busy.  If you haven't ordered your garden seeds yet, that is your #1 priority!  Look at the short list of local seed companies that I listed in the previous article (or any others that you like) and browse their online catalogs from the comfort of home. This is not the year to delay, the best varieties are already getting low or sold out.  If you can't wait and want to grow something in mid-winter, consider micro-greens or sprouts to have freshly grown salad greens right now. This article includes several short winter tips and easy-to-do ideas that will prove useful and make the coming garden season more productive.

Too early to fertilize.  House plants can begin to look very tired and weak at this time of year but resist the temptation to give them fertilizer.  It's best to not stimulate new upper growth until daylength gets longer and plants can grow stronger. If your plants have become a bit too tall or lanky due to low light levels they can be pruned back now in preparation for the new grow phase that's about to begin as daylength gets longer (over 10 hours/day).  Don't be shy with your pruning shears.  Removing 30-50% of the tops will stimulate the roots to re-grow strong new shoots for the spring.  Even outdoor plants brought indoors like geraniums, fuchsia, petunias, and begonias will respond well to this treatment.

Hello Weekend!

Not quite as cold as last weekend, but still a gentle reminder that it is still winter in Vermont!  We may see a touch of snow this weekend, which will add to the already beautiful scenery.
Here's what's happening in the farm stand this weekend...
MEAT:  Our chicken freezer is stocked and ready for your weekend.  Roast one and use the leftovers for soups or sandwiches.  Our beef selection includes brisket, steaks, chuck roasts, stewing beef, short ribs and ground beef.  Need a recipe idea?  Try this Maple Cider Braised brisket, it is absolutely delicious and easy!  For pork we've got sausage, ribs, bacon, roasts, chops and hams.  So you see, there is something for everyone!
PRODUCE:  You'll find on our back table some amazing in season produce.  Apples, garlic, onion, potatoes, squash, carrots, turnips and even dried beans for your soups!
MAPLE:  Our award winning wood fired Vermont maple syrup is ready and waiting.  Try some of our maple cream while you're at it and don't forget to grab a bag of maple almonds on your way out!
EVERYTHING ELSE:  Fresh pastries and fresh bread will be here on Saturday.  We've got milk, yogurt and cheese in the fridge and pizza and gelato in the freezer!  On our shelves you'll find mustards, honey, hot sauce, salsa, coffee, soaps, tshirts, shadow boxes, canvas prints and more!

We look forward to seeing you soon.  Remember to be aware of cars, farm equipment, dogs, and grandchildren when pulling into the driveway to our farm stand.  We are located at 1966 Healdville Road in Mount Holly and are open Tuesdays through Sundays from 12:00 - 5:00.
