Transplant Time is Here, Are Your Plants Ready?

June brings better gardening weather, what a welcome change!  Although it's been dry for Vermont spring, recent rains have created a great time to get new plants into their outdoor homes for the summer.  Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, onions, and salad greens have mostly been planted out.  Now it's time for heat loving plants like basil, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, squash, okra, sweet potatoes, & peppers to be in the ground.  Annual flowers like geraniums, petunias, marigolds, nasturtiums, and snapdragons will do well outside too.  Early transplanted tomatoes and pepper will do well, but cool nights have slowed growth so be patient, they will soon get going!

Transplanting into the garden is a major change for plants and taking some care to minimize the stress will help plants get through transplant shock better and increase their growth.  It's also time to start watching for early insect pests, to prune some flowering shrubs, and NOT to fertilize your lawn now.

Whether you grow your own seedlings (Congratulations!) or buy your garden plants, they will need some preparation for the transition into the "real world" outdoors.  There are big differences between the comfortable indoors (house or greenhouse) and the tough world outside so plants need a little help to adapt to those harder conditions outside.  This process is called "hardening off" and it is easy if you follow a few basic steps.

Here we are, another week, another newsletter!  Thanks for following along!

Farm life keeps us busy this time of the year.  The weather has cooperated enough to allow Kevin into the hay field to bale up some hay!  Often times the weather window of opportunity is a small one, so we have to be ready when Mother Nature is!
Our meat chickens are all out on pasture, and enjoying their new digs!  Nothing better than fresh air, dirt, grass and bugs.
Our farm partners have been busy as their harvesting season increases weekly.  We have organic strawberries available in the farm stand!  These berries are from Evening Song Farm and are absolutely delicious.

We'll also have home made pies available on Saturdays for the next couple of months.  I (Patti) bake the pies, using recipes from my Mom.  This weekend we'll have rhubarb pies!

Don't forget to check out our complete meat listing while you're visiting our farm stand.  Pork chops, ham steaks, sausage, roasts, beef steaks, stew beef, ground beef and more.  A little bit of everything!

With wedding season, graduations, and Father's Day right around the corner, why not gift your recipient with a little bit of Vermont?!  We've got hand crafted wooden shadow boxes, beautiful farm canvas prints, and hand crafted lamps just to name a few.

We'll be looking for you at the farm stand this weekend!

With the summer traffic and haying season, please be mindful of hay equipment, grandkids, vehicles and customers when driving in and out of our driveway.  Our farm stand is located at 1966 Healdville Road in Mount Holly.  Open Tuesdays through Sundays from 12:00pm-5:00pm.  Closed on Mondays!

Our Farm

Here's a picture we took after finishing up evening chores.  On the left are our cattle, which have just been moved into a new paddock of fresh grass.  We move the cattle daily to allow them access to new grass and to rest the previous grazed pastures.

On the right are the chicken tractors, which house our meat birds.  These bottomless pens allow the chickens to forage but also to keep them safe from predators.  We move each of these chicken tractors every day.

Ludlow Rotary Announces Award of
Scholarships to Area Graduates

The Ludlow Rotary Club (LRC), continuing its scholarship program initiated in the 1960's, announced its 2022 awards to area graduating students wishing to pursue educational opportunities beyond high school.  This program is available to all graduating high school seniors residing in LRC's service area of Ludlow, Cavendish, Mt Holly, and Plymouth.

Since the inception of this program, LRC has awarded over $290,000 to graduates. Selection of our recipients is based upon the following criteria: scholastic achievement, financial need, realistic goals, extracurricular activities and community service. Each category is equally weighted.

The following are the Scholarships being awarded to local graduates in the class of 2022, all attended Green Mountain Union High School. Congratulations to all that applied and to our recipients.

Daniel E. Kesman Memorial Scholarship - $2,000

Dan was a Rotarian for over 42 years.  He was a resident of Ludlow and attorney by profession.  His passion for the LRC lead to the beginning of the club's annual Penny Sale and scholarship program.  Dan donated frequently to the club and upon his passing in 1987 the LRC named its first scholarship in memory of Dan.

This year we are pleased to award the Daniel E. Kesman Memorial Scholarship to Grace Tyrrell of Cavendish.

Ralph D. Hogancamp Vocational Scholarship - $2,000

Ralph became a member of the LRC in 1984.  Ralph originally was a charter member of Charlestown, NH club in 1947.  He was known to many Ludlow residents for his local businesses he operated.  He originally owned and operated a luncheon restaurant in what is now the location of DJ's Restaurant.  Ralph also owned and operated a catering and tent rental business.  Ralph passed away in 1999.  The LRC named its second annual scholarship after Ralph for the variation of vocations he initiated in Ludlow.  Ralph maintained a 100% membership attendance for many, many years.  He was very passionate of Rotary serving 52 years as a member.

This year we are pleased to award the Ralph D. Hogancamp Vocational Scholarship to Reid Hryckiewicz.

Robert W. Kirkbride Community Service Scholarship - $2,000

This is the 8th annual award of this scholarship honoring an outstanding community member and beloved Rotarian of 60+ years. Until Bob's passing in 2020, he was an active LRC member. This award is in specific recognition of the graduate's Community Service involvement. This was Bob's passion.

We award this year's Robert W. Kirkbride Service Scholarship to Clara Gignoux of Cavendish.

The Joseph "Jay" Girouard Scholarship - $1,000

The Girouard scholarship, a new award approved by LRC for Jay's dedication to the Rotary, particularly his work on behalf of the annual Penny Sale, is the primary funding source for these scholarships

The Girouard Scholarship is awarded to Haley Racicot of Ludlow.

The LRC awards two traditional scholarships, each in the amount of $1000, were awarded to the following students:  Jayme Hamel and Mackenzie Martin both of Ludlow.
