Author Andre Fleche to speak at 138th Annual Meeting for Vermont Sons of Union Veterans Castleton University professor of history Andre Fleche, Phd will serve as the keynote speaker at the 138th Annual Vermont Encampment for Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) at American Legion Post 31 in Rutland City on Saturday, May 20. Dr. Fleche's talk – titled "Union Veterans and the Making of the Modern U.S." – will draw from his body of published works, including his book The Revolution of 1861: The American Civil War in the Age of Nationalist Conflict. SUVCW Commander in Chief Bruce Frail is scheduled to attend the 138th Department of Vermont Encampment program, along with officers of the Department of Vermont. "We are proud [Rutland County] is hosting the 138th Annual Encampment for the Department of Vermont," Ripley Camp officers announced. "We are also pleased that Civil War historian and author Andre Fleche from Castleton University will be our speaker as well as the opportunity for members and the public to meet Commander in Chief Bruce Frail." The encampment is an annual meeting and SUVCW tradition tracing to the predecessor organization Grand Army of Republic (GAR). The Rutland County unit, Ripley Camp No.4, of the Department of Vermont is hosting the four camps currently active in Vermont. Ripley Camp officers are Commander Daniel Celik, Treasurer Dennis Devereux, Secretary Joshua Ferguson, Senior Vice Commander Kyle Ellis, Junior Vice Commander Peter, and Patriotic Instructor Edward Hall. Bio: Andre Fleche is professor of history at Castleton University and an award-winning author and historian of the Civil War. Dr. Fleche's work has been featured by a variety of outlets, including Civil War History, the Journal of the Civil War Era, the New York Times' Disunion series, and CSPAN's American History Television. He is the author of The Revolution of 1861: The American Civil War in the Age of Nationalist Conflict (University of North Carolina Press, 2012).
