The play Old Dogs on the Porch, written by Herb Childress and directed by Mikki Lane, will be presented by Theater in the Woods on May 8 & 9 and May 15 & 16 at 7:00 pm, and Sundays May 10 & 17 at 3:00 pm at the Wallingford Town Hall Theater. Old Dogs on the Porch portrays three friends on the porch of the general store, as they deal with the demise of their eldest member. As another generation of a Vermont family farm passes on, his friends and his children have to wrestle with the tensions between freedom and duty, between opportunities and loyalty. What do we owe one another, what do we owe ourselves, and what do we do when those ideals don’t match? Preview audiences have raved about the play. “A lovely dive into family dynamics and friendship and loyalty.” “Beautiful! Moving and funny.” “Like Our Town only more local. So many aspects cut close to home.” The play has its origins in Theater in the Woods’ annual Ten-Minute Play event, in which writers sit together for an hour to craft individual ten-minute scripts that are then tuned for two weeks, rehearsed for a month, and then performed as stage-readings in a dinner-theater setting. This year, thanks to a $9,300 grant from the Arts & Social Cohesion program at the Vermont Community Foundation, one of those short plays was selected for development into a fully staged two-act play. The VCF grant enabled broad community participation, ranging from selection of the chosen play to open public rehearsals and readings with feedback. The culmination of the grant broadens access to the arts yet again, through admission to the performances by free-will donation rather than fixed-price tickets.
