The Town of Cavendish and the Cavendish Community and Conservation Association (CCCA) invite the public to the Proctorsville Green on Wednesday August 5 at 6pm when Rick Redington & His Band Tuff Luv return for the final concert of the summer season. Rick Redington brings his songwriting talent to life on "Guitar & Other Stringed things" with Heather "Boom Boom" Lynne providing the Bottom notes alongside Jay "Crazy Legs" Osborn and "Blakey G" Gowan on percussion. CCCA raffle winners will be drawn so pick up a last minute ticket and get lucky!!! As always, the concerts are free and open to the public. Kesha Ram Hinsdale,Vermont Senate Majority Leader, recently sent out a notice that Vermont's August 11 Primary Election ballot requests continue to trail an already historically low turnout cycle. Absentee ballot requests are only one measure of voter participation. Many Vermonters vote early in person at their town clerk's office or wait until Election Day. But with only two weeks left before the primary, these numbers suggest turnout could once again reach historic lows unless more voters make a plan to participate. Whether you vote absentee, cast your ballot early at your town clerk's office, or vote on Tuesday, August 11, the important thing is to make a plan. If you've requested an absentee ballot, remember that in many communities you can drop it off directly at your town clerk's office instead of mailing it. Tenor saxophonist Jonathan "Lockjaw" Lorentz leads a powerhouse quartet that includes Tom Robinson (piano), Brendan "Low End" Dowd (upright bass) and Tim Gilmore (drums). Their set is high energy, blues-infused, and full of improvisation.Raised in Shrewsbury, Jonathan spent his early years playing with his hometown Muddy Rhodes Blues Band, while learning jazz from Rutland area educators Glenn Giles and Bear Irwin. Lorentz later moved to NYC, where he studied with Lenny Pickett, Frank Foster and George Garzone, and played venues ranging from Smalls to CBGB'S, Radio City, the Bitter End, and the Blue Note. He earned international radio play and acclaim for his album Borderlands (Métier Jazz), for which Fanfare magazine stated "Lorentz has really got it: a great style, an explorative mind, and a concept that goes beyond the usual fare you hear from jazz groups." Lorentz says that he's "On top of the world excited to return home to play. Vermont is such a fantastic place, maybe even a state-of-mind. I have so many great memories of music and musicians there, and getting to know the community. I'm still inspired by experiences like hearing Tito Puente at Discover Jazz, Dave Brubeck in Rutland, the Basie Band outside at Pico, trumpeter Dave Ellis at Killington, and catching Billy Comstock (Sr), Ace Leonard, and Pete Giancola around town. I even heard the JGB at a wedding up north! I'm honored to have been a small part of the scene over the years, playing Radio Bean, sitting-in with Sandra Wright, late nights in Burlington, Mojazz in Wilmington, Pink's in Manchester, 51 in Middlebury, playing on the Killington Access Road with Joey Leone, or Center Street Alley with Steve Audsley. One of my most memorable gigs was indoors at the Shrewsbury Library with Muddy Rhodes (Tom "Bout Right" Mitchell, Dirk "Blind Boy" Thomas, Paul "Thudd" Sgalia, and Mark "Catfish" Hamilton). It was hot, and the bookshelves must have been pushed to the sides of the room, because people were dancing!" |

A MidSummer Night's Salsa Invites Community to Dance in the Streets of Proctorsville PROCTORSVILLE, Vt. — On Saturday, August 8, the heart of Proctorsville will come alive with Latin music, dancing, local food, and community connection during A MidSummer Night's Salsa, an outdoor celebration hosted by Planet Axis and SuperRoasted at 73 Depot Street from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. For one summer evening, Depot Street will be closed to traffic and transformed into an open-air dance floor under the stars. The idea for the event grew out of the community block party held following the devastating floods of 2023. "The last time we celebrated together in the street was after the 2023 floods," said Wendy Reynolds of Planet Axis. "It was a difficult time, but we came together to celebrate what makes this community so special. That evening reminded us how important it is to gather, connect, and support one another. We don't need a tragedy to remember that we're neighbors, friends, members of the same community, and ultimately, all part of the same planet.” The inspiration for a salsa celebration came from fellow Planet Axis organizer Stefan Beaumont, who has been taking dance lessons in Rutland with Embodied Arts by Rix. "I kept thinking what a fun and unexpected way this would be to bring people together," Beaumont said. "Dance has a way of breaking down barriers. You don't need experience—you just need a willingness to have fun and connect with the people around you." The evening begins with a beginner-friendly salsa lesson from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., taught by Julia and Jano Rix of Embodied Arts by Rix. The lesson is designed for complete beginners while offering plenty of enjoyment for experienced dancers as well. Following the class, the street will become a lively social dance featuring Salsa, Bachata, and Merengue until 9:30 p.m. Designed to celebrate culture, movement, and community, A MidSummer Night's Salsa welcomes participants of all ages and experience levels. Whether attending with family, friends, or arriving solo, everyone is invited to enjoy an unforgettable summer evening filled with music, dancing, and connection. Local food vendor Moon and Stars VT will serve freshly prepared corn arepas and empanadas made with locally grown ingredients, while SuperRoasted will offer coffee, beverages, snacks, and sweet treats throughout the evening. Complimentary water and seltzer will be available for dancers, and locally crafted salsa and hot sauce will also be available for purchase. Organizers are also making sustainability part of the celebration by hosting the event as a plastic-free gathering. Guests are encouraged to bring reusable water bottles, cups, or utensils. As a thank-you for supporting environmentally friendly practices, attendees who bring reusable items will receive a complimentary ice cream ticket. A suggested donation of $20 helps support the event, although contributions of any amount are welcome. Children 12 and under attend free, making the celebration accessible for families and the entire community. Whether you're taking your very first salsa steps or you're an experienced social dancer, A MidSummer Night's Salsa promises an evening of joyful movement, vibrant culture, delicious local food, and meaningful community connection.
