Archived Newsflash emails can be read at: https://mthollynewsflash.blogspot.com Hitchcock's "The Lodger" Highlights FOLA's Annual Silent Movie Festival   While not always known, Alfred Hitchcock began filming his great mysteries during the heyday of the silent movie era.  His greatest silent movie thriller, 'The Lodger', will be the feature silent movie at FOLA's annual Silent Movie Festival on Saturday, August 20 at 7 PM at the Ludlow Town Hall's Heald Auditorium. The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog is a 1927 British silent thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Marie Ault, Arthur Chesney, June Tripp, Malcolm Keen and Ivor Novello. The film is based on the novel The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes and the play Who Is He? co-written by Belloc Lowndes. Its plot concerns the hunt for a Jack the Ripper-like serial killer in London. Hitchcock's finest silent thriller, the film established him as a name director.   Upon its release the trade journal Bioscope wrote: "It is possible that this film is the finest British production ever made".  It also saw Hitchcock make his first cameo appearances in a film. The story concerns one of Hitchcock's favorite themes, a man being mistakenly identified as a killer. It all begins when a young blonde woman screams. She is the seventh victim of a serial killer known as the Avenger, who targets young blonde women on Tuesday evenings.  That night, blonde model Daisy Bunting is at a fashion show when she and the other showgirls hear the news. Daisy returns home to her parents and her policeman sweetheart Joe, who have been reading about the crime in the newspaper. A handsome but secretive young man bearing a strong resemblance to the description of the murderer arrives at the Bunting house and asks about their room for rent.  He pays her a month's rent in advance.  The relationship between Daisy and the reclusive lodger gradually becomes serious, making Joe, who is newly assigned to the Avenger case, unhappy. What follows is the impact of mistaken identity on everyone, especially on Daisy and the lodger, ultimately ending in the surprising conclusion of the film. The movie is open to everyone and is free; donations are appreciated.  Information is available at 802-855-8883.   Ludlow Rotarians Ready Ducks For Annual Race on the Black River   In keeping with tradition, and the need for our fine feathered friends to exercise, the Ludlow Rotary Club (LRC) will sponsor the 23rd running of the duck race on the Black River on Saturday, August 20 beginning at 12 Noon.   At Noon the sponsored ducks will be dropped from the Depot Street bridge by Rotarians into the Black River to determine who the fastest duck to reach Walker Bridge is.   The ducks reaching the Walker Bridge first will be rewarding their sponsors with cash prizes of $200, 100, and 75 for the first three winners.  Keeping with tradition, the last sponsored duck to make it across the finish line will earn $25 for its sponsor-just for trying.   Naturally, in order to be one of the winners, sponsors need to rent their ducks by purchasing raffle tickets.  Tickets are available in numerous "sizes":   $5 for a single ticket $20 for a quack pack (5 for $20) $50 for a corporate duck   Raffle tickets are available at Benson's Chevrolet, Fletcher Memorial Library, Peoples United Bank and Ludlow Insurance and any Ludlow Rotarian!  They are also available online at www.ludlowrotary.com.   Vermont Home Gardener   August Abundance!   Despite the lack of rain, it's great to see your garden in full maturity and producing an abundance of veggies, herbs, flowers, and soon to be harvested potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, and more.  It's the reward that a hard-working gardener deserves and should enjoy this time of year.  Proper harvesting is key to good production, the more you pick the more you get!  Leaving fruits on plants to get over-ripe or go to seed tells the plants its job is done and to stop production.  Of course, abundance can become a burden too, unless we have some good ways to deal with it.  Let's look at what to plant in August, what to do with too many zucchinis, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc., and what pests are out there now.   What to plant in August?  As plants come out of the garden there might be some open space where we can plant late crops to get another harvest.  Carrots and beets can still be planted for a nice late crop.  Also, continue planting your favorite salad greens (leaf lettuce, mesclun mix, spinach, arugula, etc.).  If you add a little extra compost or organic fertilizer, mulch, and keep them watered they will grow well and won't bolt as the days are now getting shorter.   Get the full article at VermontHomeGardener.com   Join We Co-Hosts ~ The Thrive Center & Petra's Wellness Studio ~ In Honoring & Celebrating: Usui Reiki Awareness Days August 15 - 22.  (Ahhh....YES ~ Time is such an illusion.  It seems like an eternity since we hosted a share @ Thrive, because it has been :), having last done so, September 24th!  After chatting with Petra earlier this Summer,                                                        I am delighted to co-promote this event, which Petra was already underway sculpting. I plan to be there on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 11:30am-4:30pm. I will also continue to operate from Apple Hill Farm on Monday and Friday from 10:30am-5:30pm. Anne will be discussing her new book "Aventurine and the Reckoning", a book of intrigue and secrets as we follow the character Aventurine Morrow. Anne Britting Oleson lives and writes from the mountains of Central Maine. She has published five novels and three poetry chapbooks. Thank you to Joan Connor for making Anne's visit possible.   Women's Freedom Center Speaks to Ludlow Rotary   At a recent meeting of the Ludlow Rotary Club (LRC), representatives of the Women's Freedom Center (WFC) totally captivated the club membership as they discussed sexual violence and sex trafficking in Windham and Southern Windsor Counties.   Due to the nature of WFC's organization, which supports the recovery of women sexually victimized, the speakers, Shari and Rhiannon, were only identified by their first names.  No video recording of the meeting was made.   The speakers outlined some of the types of cases they support and the emotional and physical damage that they needed to deal with in assisting victimized women, and their children, as they attempt to recover and return to a "normal" life.   Rotarian Mary Crowley noted the intensity of the discussion when she noted that "I've never seen such captivated audience as club members were during this discussion and the question-and-answer period that followed".   The WFC, formerly known as the Women's Crisis Center, has a 48 year history in the two counties.  Among the many roles it plays in assisting victimized women are: ·       A 24/7 confidential hotline ·       Crisis shelters for women and children ·       Development of individual crisis plans ·       Emergency transportation ·       Group support ·       Community outreach and education   The WFC is an approved 501(c)(3) organization.  Their funding is dependent on support from the federal and state with much of their financial support coming from individual donors.  The WFC has a web site at https://womensfreedomcenter.net.  They also maintain a Facebook page at www.facebook.com/womensfreedomcenter.  Their 24/7 hotline is 802-885-2050 for Southern Windsor County and 802-254-6954 for Windham County; they will accept collect calls.
