Vermont Home Gardener June Gardening After the cool, wet days of May we can now get seriously planting and cultivating our gardens. While there are many plants that can be seeded outdoors now don't be tempted to start working your soil if it is still too wet. If you till your garden it is very important to wait until the soil has drained and dried enough to be crumbly, not sticky. I do not till my garden soil at all because tilling is very damaging to soil structure, fertility and is unnecessary. If you have raised beds you can get started sooner because of better drainage, warmer soils & no tilling is needed. Whether you are beginning a new garden or wish to improve an established garden, raised beds will make your garden more productive, more convenient, and are less work in the long run (no tilling, ever!). Raised beds do very well in the hilly, rocky, weedy, cool, wet, northern New England conditions. Late May and early June transplanting of our subtropical plants (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and squash starts) is tempting but may not be help if we have cool nights. Plants make sugars (energy) in the sunlight but grow mostly in the dark night. Subtropicals can not grow on cool nights (below 50 F) and become vulnerable to diseases and pests. It's best to delay transplanting until nights are warmer or be sure to protect them with row covers (Agribon). Because the spring weeds like goutweed, garlic mustard, and dandelions have been growing so well now is also a great time to turn them your own liquid "bio-fertilizer" that will improve your garden soil for free!

- Continue hardening off broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, & Brussel sprout plants
- Harvest (more) spring rhubarb. (Pull, don't cut!)
- Loosen garden soil without turning or tilling.
- Early lawn mowing (4+ inches), avoid wildflower areas.

I'm looking for a solid wood bookshelf that is not too big and not too small for the textbooks in my office. To be just right, it needs to have at least 3 shelves, with the height between shelves at least 11 inches. The unit needs to be shorter than 52 inches, at least 30 inches wide, and 11 inches deep. Happy to pay a modest amount (less than $80).

THE REAL BETSY ROSS Since there is no evidence of a "first" flag, the claim that Betsy Ross made the first American flag is a moot point. However, was her contribution to the flag the five pointed star?
Whether she did or didn't contribute to the American flag, Ross deserves to be known in her own right, not only as a flag maker but also for her role in the Free Quaker movement, as a "wise woman" (healer); a business woman who launched a successful business that lasted for well over 50 years; and as a rebel in the American Revolution. In celebration of Flag Day, the Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) will be holding a talk on Betsy Ross June 14th, 2 pm at the Cavendish Stone Church, 2295 Main Street. This is a good opportunity to see inside this church built in 1844, as well as learn about the amazing life of Ross, and have an opportunity to make a five pointed star in one snip.
