Vermont Home Gardener: September Garden Tips Gardens are now heading into the season finale with harvests of almost everything. Dry weather has been hard on many veggies and flowers but extra mulching and watering can keep plants healthy. This is a good time of year to apply foliar compost tea and your own homemade biofertilizers (see July article online). Tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, and cabbage will do well if you follow a few basic tips to extend the season as described in the full article. Late summer pests & diseases are appearing too so be alert and see my tips in the article. Soil Testing is a simple and important task we all should do this time of year so you know what is needed for next year. Fertilizing your soil without a soil test is like taking medications without knowing what, if anything, is wrong. Bad idea and possibly a waste. The University of Vermont Extension service provides a good soil analysis and recommendations report. Get their simple directions online here, mail in your dry soil sample (1/2 cup) in a clean plastic bag with $17 and they will send you the information by email or regular post to make your garden or lawn better. Make more Compost! This time of year we have an abundance of ingredients for the compost bins. Old garden plants, grass clippings, fruit & veggie scraps, and autumn leaves (soon) all produce great soil amendments. Here is a comprehensive website to all things compost.

It could happen to your mailbox, and it is a Federal Offense. | | | | | Ludlow Rotary Club 35th Annual Chili Cook-off The Ludlow Area Rotary Club is sponsoring the 35th Annual Chili Cook-off on Saturday, October 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The cook-off will be located at the traffic light on Depot Street. Proceeds to benefit The Ludlow Area Rotary Charitable Fund that services Ludlow, Cavendish, Mount Holly, and Plymouth. Admission is $15.00 for adults, $5 for under 12, and $35 for 2 adults and 2 children. It includes chili, bread, ice cream and cider. Chili entries are welcome from individuals, clubs, and businesses. Entry fee of $10.00 will include a table space and sterno. Participants are responsible for arriving between 10:30 – 10:45 the day of the cook-off. Cash prizes will be awarded in the "People's Choice" category. Awards will be given to the chili entry with the most votes in the "Judges' Choice", "Spiciest", and "Team Spirit" categories. Chili entrants are asked to provide five (5) gallons of chili for this event and we can help with servers if needed. Pictured from last year's Chili-Cookoff are many of the hundreds of visitors who received "taste checks" from the more than 25 different chili concoctions prepared by area businesses, groups, and individuals. The chilis varied from well-seasoned Tex-Mex versions to a vegetarian one with a variety of dishes in between. To enable each participant to fully enjoy the taste of each chili, cider was available to clean the palate with ice cream at the conclusion.
