Archived Newsflash emails can be read at: https://mthollynewsflash.blogspot.com Vermont Home Gardener   Transplant Time Is Here, Are your Plants Ready?   The beginning of June brings better gardening weather, what a welcome change!  Although it's been a bit dry for Vermont spring, recent rains have created a great time to get some plants into their outdoor homes for the summer.  Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, onions, and more salad greens can move out now but it's still a little early for heat loving plants like basil, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, squash, okra, & peppers.  Annual flowers like geraniums, petunias, marigolds, nasturtiums, and sweet peas will do well outside now.  Some adventuresome gardeners have already planted out their tomatoes and they might do well, but cool nights will stunt growth so I'll wait just a little longer.  Transplanting into the garden is a major change for plants and taking some care to minimize the trauma will help plants get through transplant shock smoother and carry on with their growth.   Whether you grow your own seedlings (Congratulations!) or buy your garden plants, they will need some preparation for the transition out to the "real world".  There are big differences between the comfortable indoors (house or greenhouse) and the tough world outside and plants need a little help to adapt to those harder conditions outside.  This process is called "hardening off" and it is easy if you follow a few basic steps we discuss in this article …   Read the full new article (and past articles) at VermontHomeGardener.com   Birds & Blooms is your chance to find a one of a kind bird house or feeder, potted plants, and gift worthy art from carvings to photographs and pottery!  Join the outdoor fun and see the ladies in their bird hats,  Saturday June 26 at Svec Memorial Park, Proctorsville, VT from noon to 5pm.  Wrap it up with dinner at Murdocks' or a beer at Outer Limits and thanks for supporting Cavendish Streetscapes.  Find us on Facebook to preview more items.   Frost Hill Peony Nursery is selling mature peony plants out of their field this Sat the 5th and Sun the 6th from 9 A.M to 1 P.M only.  $15 each. Kayak Building Camp From July 26th - August 19th, from 9 am to 3 pm, a kayak building course will take place on the front lawn of 43 Main Street.  It is for students entering grades 6-12. The cost is $3200. Scholarships are available. This interactive summer program teaches student boat builders how to build, maintain, and restore kayaks. Students should be prepared to work hard, have fun, and go home with new skills and an eye for what it takes to keep kayaks afloat. We are currently accepting any interested and motivated students. The kayak course will be taught by Eric Feldborg, an experienced Science and Math educator, who earned his Doctorate degree in Learning, Leadership, and Community at Plymouth State University. He has since been New Hampshire's State Director of Career and Technical Education, State Director of STEM education, and a Work-Based Learning Coordinator. Eric's career began as a process and product engineer. An avid woodworker, sailor, and fly-fisherman, he voluntarily teaches learn-to-sail programs for individuals of all ages. Rise and Shine: The Hero Project Rise and Shine: The Hero Project is a theatre camp for ages 6-10, the camp takes place from July 12-July 16th from 9 am to 12:00 pm. The cost is $200. In this theater camp, students will invent and embody their favorite hero/heroine by portraying them in original scenes, songs, monologues, and/or dances. Their chosen hero/heroines can be anyone (or thing!)–their Grandma, a made-up superhero, or even based on their favorite animal, food, car, or tree. Broadway veteran and Andover resident Susan Haefner will provide students with a safe and joyful inventive process, guiding students in developing their singing, dancing, and acting skills while promoting listening, collaboration, storytelling, communication, and empathy– essential skills that can translate to students' academic and personal success. The focus will be on exploring the creative process rather than focusing solely on a finished product. If the participants choose, there will be an option to present an informal performance for family or friends.   Make A Scene: Theater Camp The second theater camp is for children ages 11-17 and lasts for 2 weeks from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and costs $650. It is from July 19- July 30th from 9 am to 3 pm. Broadway veteran and Andover resident Susan Haefner will lead this three-week theater camp focusing on comedy, acting techniques, improvisation, and performance practice. We will build an ensemble of theater-makers and develop an original variety show based on participants' interests and talents. Activities will be designed specifically for the group and will include acting, writing sketches, improvisation, comedy, basic dance/movement, set design, music and video production, costume design, and lots more. There will be opportunities to experience theater in professional settings such as streaming performances and even a field trip to Weston Playhouse if Covid guidelines and other factors allow. This theater camp will inspire creativity, confidence, camaraderie, and a spirit of play— culminating with the option to perform our original variety show for family and friends. Nature Writing Camp This camp is an outdoor adventure camp for ages 12-15, and lasts for 1 week. It takes place from July 12th to July 16th from 9 am to 12 pm. The Expeditionary School at Black River's Head of School, Kendra Rickerby, will introduce students to the technique of observing the natural world that surrounds them so that they can write stories about what they see and are pondering. Each morning will begin with a review of a poem from Sing a Song of Seasons: A Nature Poem for Each Day of the Year by Fiona Waters. Writers will be given an opportunity to weave each day's written reflections into a culminating story accompanied by illustrations, either drawn by them or made from natural elements. All outdoor adventures will be within walking distance of the school campus. The use of electronics will not be a part of this learning experience, rather writers will be provided with a journal and a pencil. While we had to limit the number of attendees due to Covid-19 Regulations, please support our graduate by lining Depot Street with signs at 10:00 am.  Okemo Valley TV will be recording the event for the public to view.
