Local Author Publishes Book "Chronicles of a Grumpy Old Man" Ralph Pace, a Rutland resident and formerly of Ludlow, has published a new fiction book about the life of an elderly man entitled, "Chronicles of a Grumpy Old Man". According to Pace, the book is the product of many years thinking about his life after 90 and thinking that it was far more interesting than he had anticipated. The book is about a man in his nineties suddenly rediscovering himself and love but only after experiencing a number of personal challenges and renewal of memories that shaped him into what he was. It has no murders, no car chases, no violence, or heavy sex. Yet it doesn't need these gimmicks to demonstrate that a man that old can still develop skills and emotions once thought to be restricted to the youth and the challenges faced as age takes its toll. "It's unfortunate that we think of old age as something where we are just waiting to meet our maker. I, personally, don't believe that. I hope this book will make that very clear." The book, published by Amazon, is now available in hard cover form and, as a paper back, in large print.
Pace indicated that future plans will address the creation of an eBook for the Kindle Library. He is now in the process of writing a second fictional book about the installation of modern computer systems in a Middle East country. |

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY PHOTO CALENDAR CONTEST INFORMATION The Photo Calendar contest is a new event sponsored by the Friends of the Fletcher Memorial Library. The Friends are developing a 2027 Calendar which will feature photos of Ludlow and be sold in the Fall of 2026. All proceeds will be used to support the library. We are looking for photos that showcase some aspects of Ludlow: our beautiful mountains, lakes, flowers, wildlife, and quaint village are all ideas that come to mind. An independent panel of judges will pre-screen all submitted photos to narrow them down to 24 semi-finalist photos. The 24 semi-finalist photos will be voted on by the public during the week of August 10-15. Photos will be displayed in Fletcher Memorial Library, and ballots can be obtained from the front desk. Photos must be submitted no later than July 13, 2026. Stop by the library for the rules and the application form. |

The Best of Vermont Summer Festival Unveils Exciting Musical Lineup for 2024 [Ludlow, Vermont] - The Best of Vermont Summer Festival is thrilled to announce the talented musicians and artists set to take the stage at this year's festival on August 24-25, 2024. Celebrating the essence of summer in Vermont, the festival promises a delightful showcase of the state's finest offerings, including handcrafted artisan products, local cheeses, maple treats, ice cream, craft beverages, Vermont specialty foods, woodwork, fine art, agriculture demos, kids’ activities, antique tractor displays, and much more. Now in its 4th year, the annual festival will feature an impressive 5-act musical lineup, blending folk, funk, pop, rock, country, bluegrass, and soul. Kicking off the musical performances on Saturday, August 24th, the Bear Mountain Boys will serenade the audience with their acoustic trio performance, followed by the Rustie Bus Band and the enchanting Celtic tunes of Gypsy Reel. Sunday, August 25th, promises to be another musical treat with performances by the talented Ida Mae Specker, Brooks Hubbard, and Jay Nash. Ida Mae Specker, a 3rd generation fiddle player, will set the tone for the morning, followed by a wonderful afternoon with musical duo Brooks Hubbard and Jay Nash, nationally touring artists from the Northeast. The Best of Vermont Summer Festival, located at Okemo Field (Bixby Field), offers a picturesque setting in the green mountains for two days of outdoor music along with delicious culinary tastes in the dining tent, food trucks, lots to explore in the artisan tent, and over 100 festival vendors. Attendees can also enjoy a refreshing drink at the beer garden while listening to music and exploring the incredible expansive selection of local vendors, showcasing the best that Vermont has to offer. Happy Friday, friends — let the weekend begin! What a week of wild Vermont weather! We went from sweating through nearly 90-degree temps on Monday to waking up this morning to a brisk 33 degrees. Mother Nature clearly didn't get the memo. The cattle, though? They went out on pasture this week. They are absolutely living their best lives, soaking up that gorgeous green grass. The farm stand is open and ready for you this weekend! Garden To Do List (5/22 - 5/29):
- Prune forsythia (right after blossoming)
- Begin hardening off broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, & Brussel sprout plants
- Harvest spring rhubarb. (Pull, don't cut!)
- Plant (more) greens, carrots, beets, & pea seeds
- Mulch shrubs, trees, raspberries, blueberries, & fruit trees.
- No sprays on blossoming fruit trees or bushes.
- Make liquid biofertilizer from new growth weeds like bishops weed, garlic mustard, & dandelions.
- First lawn mowing (4+ inches), after dandelion blossoms are finished.

The Mount Holly Community Historical Museum welcomes summer with the opening of our Museums on Saturday and Sunday, May 23rd and 24th from 2:00 PM-4:00PM. New exhibits offer new experiences. This summer we will be joining the Mount Holly Community at large in celebrating the 250th Anniversary of our Country. Close behind, another celebration comes next year with the establishment of the Vermont Republic in 1777. It is a time of remembering who we were and who we are today. Please plan to make a visit to the Perkins House Museum on the Belmont Village Green and a second stop for a different presentation at the Will White Blacksmith Shop, a short walk down Tarbellville Road. The Museum will be open June, July and August.
