Former Lieutenant Governor Zuckerman addresses Ludlow Rotary calling for Ranked Choice Voting

Former Lieutenant Governor David Zuckerman recently addressed the Ludlow Rotary Club advocating for ranked choice voting. He is an advocate for voters having the option to rank the candidates in a multi-candidate race when no candidate gets more than 50% of the votes in a race. He feels this allows more candidates to enter a race and gives the option for more open discourse on the issues.

In ranked choice voting, the lowest vote getter is dropped and ballots recounted for the remaining candidates according to the ranking given them by the voter. This method of voting has been discussed for years in the Legislature and is currently the law in Maine and Alaska. West Virginia and Wyoming have legislation banning the practice. It is currently being discussed as an option in Presidential primary elections.

Zuckerman acknowledged that in a society where instant results are expected, the delay in knowing the outcome of an election would be frustrating for some citizens. Election workers would have to recount ballots to determine second choice vote getters on the cast ballots, if there was not a clear winner. This would cause a delay in knowing the final results of an election.

Zuckerman is the former Vermont Lieutenant Governor, and past Senator and Legislator. He first served in statewide public office in 1996.

The LRC meets every Tuesday for lunch in Ludlow. The LRC is small and is always looking to welcome new members. If you would like to attend a meeting and learn how you may 'Serve Humanity' while enjoying the fun and fellowship of others, please contact any Rotarian or drop a note to Ludlow Rotary, PO Box 216, Ludlow Vermont. And, don't forget the Ludlow Rotary Penny Sale, April 26, 6:00 PM, Ludlow Elementary Gym.
