To register or to volunteer as a judge, contact Alex Yuster at 802-855 1857 or at the email on the flyer. | | | | | Kingsley Covered Bridge Reopening Over 85 people gathered at the newly restored Kingsley Covered Bridge in East Clarendon to celebrate its recent reopening. The 2.7 million dollar bridge restoration took nearly 14 months to complete, due in part to a set-back by flooding in July 2023. Senator Brian Collamore spoke briefly and congratulated the Clarendon community in choosing to retain their only remaining covered bridge and their continued efforts to sustain it for many years to come.
Vermont Covered Bridge Society, in conjunction with many local organizations and citizens, organized the event, complete with a cookout, and cake. OVRCC Executive Director Carol Lighthall said, "I've been to many ribbon cutting ceremonies, but this is my first at a covered bridge!" Ludlow Rotary Club President, George Thomson, is pictured holding a rubber ducky as the LRC kick-offs planning for its 25th annual Duck Race down the Black River on Saturday, August 24 at 12 Noon. The rubber duckies, purchased by individuals and businesses, get dumped into the river from the Depot Street bridge and finish at the Walker Bridge. New rainfall amounts less than a tenth of an inch possible. | | | | | Vermont Home Gardener August Gardening After the welcome rains of July, gardens are in full maturity and producing an abundance of veggies, herbs, flowers, and weeds. Soon we'll harvest potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, and more. It's the reward that a hard-working gardener deserves and should enjoy this time of year. Proper harvesting is key to successful production, and the more you pick the more you get! Leaving blossoms or fruits on plants to get over-ripe or go to seed tells the plant its job is done and to stop production. Keep "deadheading" your geraniums, marigolds, calendula, snapdragons, petunias, & zinnias so they will provide more blossoms instead of seeds (unless you want the seeds for next year). Of course, abundant harvests can become a burden too, but we have some good ways to deal with it. Let's look at what to plant in August, weeding, what to do with too many zucchinis, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc., and some pests that are out there now. 3. No one in your household is entering the contest.
4. You must really love pie!
