802.259.3707 | | | | | Ludlow & Cavendish Community Meeting on Flood Resilience Ludlow Community Center – On June 28th, from 4pm to 7pm, the Mapping for Resilience research team will host a community meeting for residents and people who work in the greater Ludlow and Cavendish area at the Ludlow Community Center. This event is being held so that folks can connect or reconnect, share stories and memories of responding to folks' needs during and after the flooding in July 2023, and hear about what the Mapping for Resilience team is trying to do with their research. This event is being hosted by the Mapping for Resilience research team. We are a research team based at Dartmouth College and Colorado School of Mines working on a project about the social, ecological, and technical challenges of last year's floods. While this is a free event, registering would be much appreciated, as we will provide some food and childcare for attendees. If you are available and in the spur of the moment would like to just come without making a reservation, please do. We will facilitate two activities designed to better understand the impacts and challenges the flood(s) have created, and look forward to your stories and insight! Forecasts of a serious heat wave without much chance of rain until Friday means gardeners need to be prepared. If you haven't yet fully mulched your plants (veggies & flowers), best to get busy! I have been laying down 3-4 inches of dried lawn clippings produced by not mowing in May. Many others are using hay, straw, wood chips, or pine needles, all good ground covers to keep the soil cooler, conserve moisture, and suppress weeds. Young annuals will especially appreciate this and you will reduce the amount of daily watering (and weeding) for this heat wave and the rest of the summer. If you were lucky enough to start garlic last fall it's time to begin picking the scapes before they curl around too far and get fibrous. Young garlic scapes are a treat for garlic pesto or simply chopped and stir fried like scallions into eggs, beef, shrimp, or mixed vegetables. All delicious and fresh from your garden! Got Compost? Compost adds valuable organic matter to your soil that will also help conserve moisture and provide nutrients.
