The sixth graders of Cavendish Town Elementary School (CTES) marked the intent of "Decoration Day," this past week by cleaning the town's cemeteries and laying flags on veterans' graves. The Memorial Day program will take place on May 30th (Tuesday).  Starting with a program at CTES at 10 am, this will be followed by a parade to Hillcrest Cemetery. The public is invited to participate in this event.  FMI Margo Caulfield 802-226-7807 margocaulfield@icloud.com Rutland County descendants of Union veterans to host 138th annual meeting in Rutland City, May 20 Sons of Union Veterans invites public to American Legion Post 31 By Joshua Ferguson RUTLAND CITY, VT - Rutland County's Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) is pleased to announce and is proud to host the annual meeting for the Department of Vermont on May 20, 2023 at American Legion Post 31 in Rutland City, Vermont. With registration at 9:30AM, the program begins at 10:00AM. All are welcome to attend. In his announcement, Department of Vermont Secretary Bruce Amsden stated SUVCW Commander in Chief Bruce Frail is scheduled to attend the 138th Department of Vermont Encampment program. The Rutland chapter is known as Ripley Camp No. 4, named in honor of the Ripley brothers of Rutland County, Vermont. The Rutland Historical Society states "[n]o Rutland family contributed to the town and to the war effort more than the Ripleys." The Ripley parents, William and Jane Betsy Ripley, played a significant wartime role in Rutland as employers and leaders of the Rutland County branch of the U.S. Sanitary Commission, and their three sons served as brothers in uniform. Edward H. Ripley, a Union Army officer, attained the rank of brevet brigadier general, notably leading the first troops into Richmond upon its surrender. William Y. W. Ripley served as a company commander in the 1st Vermont Regiment and in the 1st U. S. Sharpshooters, and he was awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery and leadership in the Battle of Malvern Hill. A third brother, Charles Ripley, also served in the 12th Vermont Infantry. Preceding the formation of Ripley Camp was Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Roberts Post No. 14 organized on November 11, 1868. GAR record books show the first post commander was brother William Y. W. Ripley, and the post was named after Colonel George T. Roberts, a Rutland resident who was killed at the Battle of Baton Rouge on August 5, 1862. In November 2022, Ripley Camp elected officers under Commander Daniel Celik, who in his second year has been instrumental in recruiting new members. Currently, there are 20 members in Ripley Camp, out of a total of 58 members in the Department of Vermont, which is composed of H.E.K. Hall Camp (Chelsea), William Scott Camp (Barre), George Jerrison Stannard Camp (Milton), and Ripley Camp (Rutland). Following tradition, the annual meeting takes the form of an Annual Encampment where new officers will be elected at the state level and a speaker will present on Civil War history and Vermont's role in Union efforts to secure victory and advance freedom.  SUVCW is a fraternal organization dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of veteran heroes who fought and worked to save the Union in the American Civil War. Organized in 1881 and chartered by Congress in 1954, SUVCW is the legal heir and successor to the Grand Army of the Republic. The final Encampment of the GAR was held in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1949 and the last member, Albert Woolson, died in 1956 at the age of 109 years. Archived Newsflash emails can be read at: https://mthollynewsflash.blogspot.com Vermont Home Gardener No Mow May A great new conservation idea is called "No Mow May - Let the Pollinators Play". The idea is very simple and makes sense. Avoid mowing your lawn in the month of May so that those early wildflowers (dandelions, clover, violets, wild strawberries, etc.) can blossom and provide vital nectar for pollinators. These early flowers are the first available major food for many wild pollinators, including honeybees and bumblebees, and it gives them a spring boost. It also gives you a valid excuse to delay mowing! If you like this idea, you can extend the benefits by mowing less lawn all summer and converting some areas to pollinator gardens. After May when I find a patch of flowering plants in the lawn I avoid mowing there until they have finished blossoming. At the very least, raise your mower blades to 4-5 inches to mow higher. That results in healthier grass with deeper roots too. More information is available at the Vermont Agency of Agriculture website. Read more gardening articles at VermontHomeGardener.com "Showboat" Comes to Ludlow Screen With All-Star Cast, Saturday, May 20 The classic musical, "Showboat", will be FOLA's next presentation on Saturday, May 20 at 7 pm in the Heald Auditorium at Ludlow's Town Hall. Featuring Ava Gardner, Kathyrn Grayson, and Howard Keel, "Showboat", is the musical that changed the Broadway theatre. With Music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, it is the story of a Mississippi gambler, his wife and the crew of a showboat touring cities along the Mississippi. A major part of the story concerns intermarriage between races and how they were dealt with around the turn-of-the-century. This version of the show was released in 1951 by MGM and directed by George Sidney, based on Edna Ferber's novel. The supporting cast featured Joe E. Brown, Marge Champion, Gower Champion, William Warfield, Robert Sterling, Agnes Moorehead and Leif Erickson. Basically, the plot centers of young Magnolia (Grayson) falling in love a Mississippi gambler, Gaylord Ravenal (Keel), much to the dismay of her mother (Moorehead) but happiness of her father, Captain Andy Hawks (Brown). This is followed by their marriage. All moves along happily for the new pair until Gaylord begins to lose gambling and goes into debt. At this point Magnolia is pregnant. Gaylord leaves her feeling she would fare better without him. In order to get by, following the birth of her daughter, Magnolia begins a career as a singer and becomes well-known. A major sub-plot involves Julie (Gardner), who has been passing as white, her husband and the local sheriff who accuses Julie of miscegenation, mixed racial marriage, which was illegal in the south. Julie portrays a singer and actress who then must leave the showboat but follows the career of Magnolia. The musical highlights include the famous 'Old Man River', as well as 'Make Believe', 'Why Do I Love You', 'Life Upon the Wicked Stage', and the classic old-timer, 'After the Ball'. As with all FOLA movies, everyone is welcome and there is no fee; donations are appreciated to help defray the costs of the film. Water is provided by the United Church of Ludlow. Rotary "Penny Sale" Major Success The Ludlow Rotary Club's (LRC) 65th Annual Penny Sale on April 29 was a "total and complete success" according to Kim Lampert, LRC event chairperson. "We had a full house that was bidding on over $20,000 worth of goods donated by area businesses and individuals." During the multiple rounds of gift awards, Lampert noted that the audience was very active in purchasing tickets for each round's awards. She praised the many businesses and individuals who provided the hundreds of gifts for the Penny Sale. "Without their continued support this fundraiser would not have been possible", she added. She especially thanked Benson's Chevrolet, Cota & Cota, Mary Meyer's Corporation, Ludlow Electric, and the Vermont Journal for the "extra level of support" they provided for the Penny Sale. At the conclusion of the event, raffle tickets winners were selected. They included: 1st Prize, $500 (plus $25 for being at the event) – Lisa Hagy 2nd Prize, $250 (plus $25 for being at the event) – Scott Walder 3rd Prize, $150 (plus $25 for being at the event) – Kathy Heald 4th Prize, $100 – Bob Lambert 5th Prize, $50 (plus $25 for being at the event) – Gloria Dawson The proceeds from the Penny Sale are a major portion of the annual scholarships the LRC awards to area graduating high school students. Lampert summarized her feelings about the success of the Penny Sale noting "It's always fun seeing people gather at this event from year-to-year. Hope to see you next year for our 66th Annual Penny Sale, held on the last Saturday in April." She also expressed her gratitude for the support provided by all the members of the Ludlow Rotary Club. Just to indicate the community support for the 65th Annual Ludlow Rotary Club's Penny Sale, the above photo provides clear evidence of the size of the audience attending this year's event.
