Garden Choices Despite our recent wintery week, April is National Garden Month so now is a great time to think about starting a garden and all the planning and choices that involves. Most basically, "What should I grow?" depends on what you want to eat or to see in your yard, and the kind of work you can do. Soil & climate conditions in Vermont place some limits on our choices but we do have a great selection of hardy fruits, vegetables, and flowers that do very well here. We are in Agricultural Zone 4 or 5, depending on location and altitude so we need to pay attention to the "Hardiness" of what we plant, especially perennials.
Thinking long-term? Some of the perennials that do well here and that you should establish in the spring include Asparagus, Rhubarb, Strawberries, Blueberries, Raspberries, Elderberries, & Blackberries. Perennials are started with young plants or "crowns" grown by nurseries and usually take 2 or 3 years to mature into production. If you don't have them growing yet, this is may be the year to start. Choose 1 or 2 that you like, locate a place they can grow undisturbed, get high quality plants (don't waste your time with cheap ones at big box outlets), and get them started. They will reward you for your effort for many years to come!

We couldn't have asked for a better maple open house last weekend! We saw so many new folks along with our regulars, and even visited with family that we don't get a chance to see very often. It was awesome. We loved showing you how we work in our sugar house and sharing our stories and love of maple.
We'll be working in the sugar house as long as mother nature provides us with sugaring weather! Cold nights, warm days. We'll take it!
Now on to the farm stand ... We had our 1,000th farm stand customer for 2022 stop by this week!! Always exciting to reach these milestones.
Fresh bread arrives in the farm stand on Saturday. And we received a fresh shipment of ravioli and sauces. The pizza freezer is full for the weekend folks, so get 'em while we got 'em.
Meat freezers are waiting for you! Since we are in maple mode, we incorporated a bit of maple into our burger night. Add a few splashes of maple syrup to your ground beef, mix and shape into patties. Top with bacon that has been fried with another splash of maple syrup. And for the bun, mix a bit of maple syrup and mayo to make the best tasting maple aioli! Try it - I think you'll like it.

Poor Attendance at FOLA Movies Causes Major Schedule Change
At a special meeting of FOLA (Friends of Ludlow Auditorium) on Saturday, the board members decided to cancel a major portion of its 2022 movie schedule due to "very poor attendance" according to Jim Alic, FOLA chairman.
In discussing the attendance decline, Alic indicated that the board would cancel all movies scheduled for April through July. "The screening of movies will be renewed on August 20 with the annual 'Silent Movie Festival'", he added. At that time, Jeff Rapsis will return to offer his unique musical background to the Alfred Hitchcock silent film, "The Lodger".
While much of the cause of the drop in attendance may be attributed to the Covid pandemic, Scott Stearns, Program Director for FOLA, believed that a "much more basic factor was at play". He noted a recent Gallup survey that showed that movie attendance had decreased threefold in 2021 compared to 2019. This level of decrease was even greater for non-urban areas of the country.
He further commented that the impact of streaming on the Internet probably was the single most significant driving force in this decrease.
The FOLA board plans to develop new strategies to make movies and other events in the auditorium more attractive. Details on this will be made public in future announcements.
As a result of this decision, the tentative revised schedule, according to Stearns, will include:
Aug. 20 – Silent Movie Festival (featuring Alfred Hitchcock's "The Lodger") Sep. 17 – "Moscow on the Hudson" Oct. 8 – "Good Morning, Vietnam" Oct. 29 – "Awakenings" Dec. 17 – "It's a Wonderful Life"
The September and October movies will be part of a Robin Williams series that will begin with a presentation by Rick Winston, a film historian, who will discuss the background of the films and Williams' roles.
In addition to the revised movie schedule, FOLA has tentatively planned on conducting two candidate forums for the primary and general elections. The primary forum is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, July 21 and the general election forum for Thursday, Oct. 13.
