We are just as excited as you are.  We picked up our pork this week and our freezers are full.  We've got bacon, chops, ribs, roasts, sausage, kielbasa, ham steak, jowl bacon and hocks!  We'll be open all weekend from 12:00 to 5:00. Last Saturday we welcomed our 1,000th farm stand customer for 2021!  Thank you Christina and thank you all for your continued support of our farm and farm stand.  We're looking forward to meeting number 2,000! The weather has been a bit off this week .. but don't fret, we've got meal ideas for any type of weather!  Pizzas or ravioli are just a couple of quick meal ideas!  Try our ground beef and Grandpa Jim's Chili Mix for a pot of delicious chili.  Roast a chicken or two .. or how about some chops?!  We will have fresh bread in the stand this weekend as well as fresh pastries.  I appreciate you all stopping by and purchasing said pastries, otherwise we'd be tempted to eat all of them ourselves! They have the goal of expanding their students and programs in the upcoming year. Head of School Kendra Rickerby hosted a virtual open house on Wednesday, April 21st and will hold another one on May 11th. You can sign up by joining the newsletter and visiting the website. The Expeditionary School at Black River's mission is to educate students to be intellectually curious, resourceful, and confident in themselves for a life of personal fulfillment and civic engagement. The 2021-2022 Program of Studies is now published on the website: www.blackriveris.org/programofstudies The program of studies outlines their innovative approach to learning which includes learning pathways. They have four career tracks for high school including: Resort Management, Information Technology, Sustainable Agriculture and dual enrollment with a post-secondary institution. Included in the Program of Studies are details about proficiency-based grading and the variety of unique programs the school offers. The school had 16 students and was open for in-person learning all year. This summer they are offering a boat-building camp where students can make a kayak and they get to keep the kayak. All materials are included in the program and the total cost is $3200. They have been hard at work fundraising with a business pledge campaign. They are asking local businesses and i socials to  pledge their support, which can be paid with payments throughout the year or all at once. The goal is $150,000 and they have raised $12,870. Archived Newsflash emails can be read at: https://mthollynewsflash.blogspot.com   Vermont Home Gardener   Garden Choices   April is National Garden Month so I'd like to write about starting a garden and the planning and choices that requires.  Most basically "What should I grow?"  It depends on what you want to eat or to see in your yard, and the kind of work you can do.  Soil & climate conditions in Vermont place some limits on our choices too.  No bananas, oranges, or mangoes, but we do have a wide selection of great fruits, vegetables, and flowers that do very well here.  We are in Agricultural Zone 4 or 5, depending on location and altitude so we need to pay attention to the "Hardiness" of what we plant, especially perennials.   Thinking long-term?  Some of the perennials that do well here and that you should establish in the spring include Asparagus, Rhubarb, Strawberries, Blueberries, Raspberries, Elderberries, & Blackberries.  Perennials are started with young plants or "crowns" grown by nurseries and usually take 2 or 3 years to mature into production.  If you don't have them growing yet, this is may be the year to start.  Choose 1 or 2 that you like, locate a place they can grow undisturbed, get high quality plants (don't waste your time with cheap ones), and get them started.  They will reward you for your effort for many years to come!   Read the full article about getting perennials & annuals started at VermontHomeGardener.com
