It's Friday — and what a way to kick off the weekend! Yes, the temps are dipping a little this weekend, but we're not letting that slow us down — and we hope you won't either. The farm stand is stocked, the shelves are full, and we are so ready for you. We hit a milestone this week! We welcomed Kate — our 1,000th farm stand customer of 2026 — earlier this week. One thousand neighbors who chose to stop by, shop local, and support what we're doing here at Plew Farm. We don't take that lightly. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. Now, let's talk about what's waiting for you this weekend. Our shelves are lined with all-local goodness: honey for your tea, mustard for pretzel dipping, jams for your morning toast, handcrafted soaps for gifting, fresh-roasted coffee, and so much more. Stevens Farm is bringing their incredible home-baked treats on Saturday — and if you know, you know. They go fast. Come early! The fridge is full and ready: organic salad greens (including spinach), yogurt, apple cider, and cheese. And we're especially excited about Millicent's sourdough English muffins — perfectly timed for a cozy weekend breakfast. Speaking of deals: eggs are buy 2 dozen, get 1 free this weekend. Farm fresh, golden-yolked, and worth every trip. For dinner, our beef and pork freezers are stocked with a variety of cuts — all raised right here on the farm. No mystery, no middleman. Just good meat from animals we raised with care. And don't forget — mulch hay is available for all of you out there tackling your yards and gardens this spring. Mount Holly Select Board seeks Treasurer The Mount Holly Select Board seeks to appoint a Treasurer to fill the position until the end of the current term in March 2027. The Treasurer role includes the responsibility to keep the Town's financial accounts, investing Town funds, keeping a record of the taxes voted, paying the bills when orders to do so are properly submitted, supporting grant applications and reporting, and interacting with other Town officials to ensure that Town finances run smoothly. This position may be supported by an Assistant Treasurer also to be appointed by the Select Board. This position is open only to those registered to vote in the Town of Mount Holly. Although the position can be performed remotely, ideally the appointee will be able to work in the Town Office for 1-2 hours per week. Competitive candidates will have prior accounting, bookkeeping or municipal treasurer experience. May is the time when we can put some things in the ground. A few seeds (peas, greens, beets, onion sets) can go in now, while others need to wait for warmer days. In early May most soil is still too wet to dig unless you have raised beds or sandy soil.
The University of Vermont Extension/Master Gardeners program has an excellent website that includes planting schedules based on agricultural zones plus details about spacing, depth, and number of seeds. I use a "natural" way to determine earliest planting dates based on observing nature's local signals ("You can see a lot by observing", Yogi Berra) We can determine safe time to plant by using our own local natural events. Scientists refer to these chronological events as "Phenology" but they are really just simple observations that you can make near your home. Here is a list of suggestions to use in your garden, wherever you are located:
Earliest times to plant...
Peas & onion sets when forsythia or daffodils begin blossoming
Lettuce, beets, carrots, spinach when first lilac leaves open, dandelions in bloom
Transplant broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, cabbage when dandelions are in full bloom
Potatoes when dandelions are in full bloom
Beans, cukes, squash when lilacs are in peak bloom
Transplant tomatoes when lily of the valley are blooming or apple blossoms open
Corn when oak leaves are dime size (young)
Peppers, melons, eggplants when irises are in full bloom
