This recipe is one that we've had in our recipe collection, but one that I haven't made in awhile. It takes a few minutes to prepare, but trust me it is worth every bit of prep time. Slow-Cooked Maple Cider Brisket. Slow cooked in your oven for 3-4 hours. It smells amazing too! We served ours with mashed potatoes and asparagus. I've had it with egg noodles as well. | | | | | HANNAH LOVELL & THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR
Without women, the Revolutionary War would not have been won. Often overlooked in history books, which tend to focus on battles and men, women were responsible for running the boycotts, serving the quarter master function in camps, nursing, manning cannons, spying and much more. Not only did women influence the outcome of the war, it set the stage for women to begin liberating themselves over the coming centuries legally, economically and from patriarchal control.
On Saturday March 14, at 1 pm at the Cavendish Library in Proctorsville, the Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) will hold a talk on Hannah Lovell and the role of women in the Revolutionary War. Lovell, who carried messages during the war, is the only woman in the Cavendish cemeteries with acknowledgment as a "patriot" on her grave stone and a Revolutionary War flag holder. However, she was far from the only female patriot. This event will include showing excerpts from Ken Burns American Revolution series, as well a "Liberty Tea" party featuring the drinks of the era-special tea, coffee and hot chocolate.

Did You Know? - In Vermont, the school taxes you pay are determined by the total cost of education across the entire state, not just your local school budget. This means your tax bill is linked to statewide education spending, rather than solely to your community's expenses.
- All Vermont residents contribute to funding every public school in the state. Your property taxes support students not only in your district, but throughout Vermont.
What Does This Mean for You? - Even if your local school budget is reduced, your property taxes can still increase if other districts across Vermont raise their budgets. The statewide nature of the funding system means changes in other districts affect your local tax rates.
- As a result, you have limited control over your local school tax rates. Decisions made in other communities and statewide education funding trends have a more direct impact on the school taxes you pay.
Common Level of Appraisal (CLA) and Tax Increases - The Common Level of Appraisal (CLA) is an adjustment that changes your tax rates to ensure you are paying taxes on the fair market value of the properties in your town. Since fair market property values have increased significantly in recent years, so too have your school taxes; and these increases have nothing to do with school spending.
What Does This Mean for You? - This statewide trend means that the CLA has had a much greater impact on your tax bill than education spending decisions.
- In Mount Holly, under this proposed budget, your school tax rate will increase by 30 cents per $100 of assessed property value.
- Changes in education spending will reduce your current tax rate by 2 cents.
- The CLA adjustment will increase your tax rate by 32 cents.
- In Ludlow, under this proposed budget, your school tax rate will increase by 15 cents per $100 of assessed value.
- Changes in education spending will reduce your current tax rate by 2 cents.
- The CLA adjustment will increase your tax rate by 17 cents.
- Towns and their school districts have little control over CLA adjustments, as they are based on market conditions and state calculations not on education spending.
Please do not Forget that LMHUUSD is a K-12 District - It is important to remember that the Ludlow-Mount Holly district budget funds more than just the two elementary schools; it also covers the cost of tuition for all students from both towns in grades 7 through 12 to attend schools in other districts.

68th Annual Ludlow Rotary's Penny Sale Announced for April 25th with Prizes Galore
When "mud season arrives", it's always time for the Ludlow Rotary Club's "cure" for that "ailment". Accordingly, the Ludlow Rotary Club is announcing its 68th annual "Penny Sale" on Saturday, April 25, 2026, in the Ludlow Elementary School's Gymnasium at 6 pm. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. This will be the 68th edition of this traditional event that features hundreds of prizes donated by area businesses and individuals plus a cash raffle. In addition to the prizes and cash raffle, refreshments will be available. Three rounds of over 100 prizes for each round can be expected. Tickets for the many prizes offered in each of the three rounds will be $1 for one or six tickets for $5. The cash raffle, normally conducted at the closure of the Penny Sale, will offer the following prizes: 1st Prize is $500 2nd Prize is $250 3rd Prize is $150 4th Prize is $100 and 5th Prize is $50 Cash raffle tickets are $2 for one or 3 tickets for $5. Cash raffle tickets may be purchased from Ludlow Rotary Club members, accessing the club's website at https://portal.clubrunner.ca/2939, or by sending a check to LARCF, Inc., PO Box 216, Ludlow, VT 05149. You do not have to be there to win one of these cash raffle prizes but, if you are in attendance, your award is increased by $25. Currently, the Ludlow Rotary Club members are soliciting area businesses and individuals for donations that may be in the form of merchandise, gift certificates, or cash. The proceeds from the Penny Sale help Ludlow Rotary Club underwrite its annual scholarship program for area graduating high school seniors planning advanced educational programs. Through this program, Ludlow Rotary Club has awarded over $175,000 in scholarship awards during the past 25 years. The annual scholarships awarded last year totaled $9,000 to graduating high school seniors located within the towns of Ludlow, Mount Holly, Plymouth and Cavendish. This is a major fund-raising effort by the Ludlow Rotary Club, now celebrating its 99th year of community service in the area. Chairing the event are Kim Lampert and Jim Rumrill.
