When the Ludlow and Mount Holly school districts merged we insisted on language that would prevent the closing of a school unless the voters in the town agreed. Yesterday the House Education Committee added language that would permit a school district to ignore any provisions in merger agreements that would prevent the district from closing a school. Though the current district board is unlikely to take such an action, the governor and legislature are also considering actions to force the merger of districts making it more difficult to predict what might happen in the future.
The Rural School Community Alliance, of which the Ludlow Mount Holly School district is a member issued the following statement:
Yesterday, the House Education Committee added a deeply concerning amendment to H.454 by adding language in Section 8 that would have disastrous consequences for public education and rural communities across Vermont. While H. 454 contains positive elements, this new provision would grant existing merged school boards and any newly created, larger school boards unilateral authority to close schools—bypassing local voting, eliminating community input, and undermining due process.
This move threatens the stability and quality of Vermont's public education system and the health of rural communities. Without meaningful local input, our communities lose their ability to make informed decisions that best serve their students, jeopardizing the quality of education our children receive.
Following challenging negotiations under Act 46, many school districts across the state adopted local voting requirements on school closures as part of their Articles of Agreement. In many cases, these provisions were critical in securing public support for school mergers. An override of these agreements by legislators would undermine the trust Vermonters put in the merger process.
We urge lawmakers to reject this harmful language and reaffirm their commitment to community-driven decision-making in public education. The future of our schools and the strength of our communities depend on it.

CHS PAPER FLOWER WORKSHOP
For many years, spring in Cavendish VT meant planting bulbs from Mary van Schaik's imported bulb business. While Mary is no longer with us, many locals' tulips, daffodils, and other plants remind us of her.
To celebrate a Cavendish springtime, the Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) will be hosting a Paper Flower Workshop, where participants can make a wide variety of flowers, as well as a unique Easter favor, from various types of paper. The workshop is free, open to the public, and will be held from 10-noon on April 12 (Saturday) at the Cavendish Community Library, Proctorsville. There are projects for all ages and abilities. This workshop has been made possible in part from a grant from the Cavendish Community Fund.

It's was so much fun connecting with each of you. We've got our farm stand open for the weekend and are ready to help you shop. We had to restock many of our items, as we sold out last week. Fear not, we've got our shelves full with honey, jams, mustards, pancake mix, and soaps.

New snow accumulation of less than half an inch possible. | | | | | Three Bands Headline Ludlow Musical Event, April 5 in Heald Auditorium Get ready to rock! This April 5, three powerhouse bands are set to take the stage for an unforgettable night of music, energy, and excitement you won't want to miss. FOLA (Friends of Ludlow Auditorium) is sponsoring this musical treat on Saturday, April 5 at 7 PM in the Heald Auditorium of Ludlow's Town Hall. The three bands include the Unqualified, Allegra and the DayDreamers, and Sammy B. Allegra Lawson is a singer, songwriter, and pianist living in Vermont. Allegra plays frequently in southern Vermont and has played all around New England. Notable venues include the Cuzzin's Stage at Mount Snow, the Snowbarn, the Dover Bar & Grill, the Midway Cafe, and the Strand Theatre on Martha's Vineyard. Allegra fronts a four-piece band called "Allegra & the Daydreamers." Formally established in 2023, the Daydreamers play Allegra's original work, along with tunes from other band members and some covers. Introspective piano ballads, searing guitar solos, spacey jams, and plenty of danceable bangers, nothing is off-limits for the Daydreamers. "Stuck in your head? Try dancing it out!" Unqualified, a Southern VT-based jam band featuring brothers Max, Nick, and Harry Blank, and cool cat, Evan Coleman on piano. They'll bring the love and good vibes, and you just need to bring your dancin' shoes! Sammy B (Blanchette) is a Ludlow native. His setlist ranges from his own original songs to covers of artists like the Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton, Phish, Tom Petty, the Eagles, Jimi Hendrix, and more. Sammy Blanchette, is a New England based singer/songwriter multi-instrumentalist who's career spans already two decades. His performance career began primarily out of Southern Connecticut in 2003 and he has since found a primary home in Southern Vermont in the Okemo Valley as of 2018. His style of work on electric and acoustic guitar ranges from a broad mix of rock, jazz, reggae, blues and jam band styles. According to Scott Stearns, FOLA's Program Director, "This an event where you may want to make sure you're wearing your dancing shoes." The doors to the auditorium will open at 6:30 PM.
