We're
halfway through our 2024 series, and it couldn't be going any better.
We've had 110-150 appreciative good people in our audience at our first 3
concerts, giving as generously as they can to support live music, with
contributions of any size (via cash, check or Venmo) going to the most
excellent musicians and to the historic Meeting House (88 Lottery Rd)
here in Shrewsbury Center, Vermont.

steeped in folk tradition, but not bound by it. Joined by Mitch Barron
and Jeff Kimball, we'll hear a treasure chest of relatable tunes about
both everyday, and extraordinary life, and backed by the Newsfeed on guitar, keys, mandolin, upright and fretless bass. Henry was recently honored as the 2023 Vermont Music Educator of the Year.

Clean Restrooms and Handicapped Parking available | | | | | Dear Singing Friends, Let's sing! The Shrewsbury Singers is an informal community chorus, singing songs in harmony from across the globe. We welcome teen – adult singers, with all levels of singing experience. The Shrewsbury Singers' Summer Session begins the week of July 14th and continues through the month of September. The session culminates with an informal concert, "Singing on a Sunday Afternoon" on Sunday, September 29th, 2024 at 3:00PM. Rehearsals are held weekly on Sunday mornings (starting on July 14th) AND Tuesday evenings (starting on July 16th). Feel free to attend either or both of the weekly rehearsals. If you would like to sing in the concert, please plan to make a total of at least 10 of the 24 scheduled rehearsals. Some part recordings will be available online to help learn the songs. Drop-in singers are welcome, too! Rehearsal Schedule: - Sunday Mornings: 9:00AM – 10:30AM at the Shrewsbury Meeting House* (upstairs Sanctuary).

As towns like Cavendish started to be settled in the 18th century, physicians were generally not among the first inhabitants. In Cavendish, it was approximately 26 years after the town was chartered before a doctor arrived. Who then was responsible for the health care needs of the newly forming communities and how did they practice?
While women served as doctor, nurse, midwife, pharmacist, and therapist, ministers were also crossed trained and referred to as "minster/physician." The medicinal and kitchen gardens were one and the same, that women maintained and used in the care of their families, following "recipes" handed down within families and among friends.
The Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) will be hosting a talk-18th Century Rural Vermont Healers- on July 21 (Sunday) 2pm at the CHS Museum, off route 131 in Cavendish Village. The talk will include the history of 18th Century healers, treatments, as well as how plants and herbs were used then and now. A brief medicinal plant walk around the Museum will conclude the program. This event is free and open to the public.
One of the speakers will be Dr. Charis Boke, a member of the Dartmouth College faculty in anthropology. She is currently writing Poison, Power, and Possibility: Building Relations with Medicinal which will explore the poetics, politics, and practices of contemporary herbalists in North America, leaning on ethnographic research, botanical histories, and lived experience to examine what it takes to remedy what ails us. Dr. Boke was involved in helping with the Benjamin Rush Medicinal Garden at the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia.
