Archived Newsflash emails can be read at: https://mthollynewsflash.blogspot.com Vermont Home Gardener   Plant Health & Seed Saving   Recent rains have been welcome but have promoted plant diseases, weeds, and some pests.  As harvesting of onions, potatoes, tomatoes, and other vegetables continues it's important to apply sanitation practices to limit damage to our hard-earned harvests. Also, while harvesting veggies, herbs, and flowers is the best part of gardening, don't overlook another valuable crop you have and might want to harvest… seeds for next year.  The easiest seeds to save include peas, beans, heirloom tomatoes, kale, or lettuce to assure you will have good seeds to plant next year.  There are many advantages to saving your own seeds and it's very satisfying to see your plants from generation to generation.  Sort of like your own botanical grandchildren.  Finally, it's time to harvest some herbs like basil (pesto!) and dill seeds, plant some more salad greens (but not bulbs or garlic yet) and learn about an easy way to identify wildflowers and weeds.   Read the full article (and past articles) at   https://vermonthomegardener.com/     dedicated to providing a local alternative to commercially produced factory food Say Hello to the Weekend! It's Friday folks and we are just as excited as you for the weekend!  We certainly enjoy seeing you all here at the farm stand.  We got RAIN this past week .. yes, rain!  It was such a wonderful sight and we are ever so grateful.  The weekend forecast looks absolutely amazing, so get out and enjoy it if you can. The grandkids have hung up their lemonade stand and will now focus on their hand pressed apple cider!  They made a batch last week for the farm stand and are happy to report they sold every last drop.  Keep an eye on our social media pages to know when they'll be pressing again.  Looking for a roast for dinner this weekend?  We've got you covered.  Check out our chuck roasts, briskets, round roast and sirloin tip roast.  And don't forget we have some amazing pork shoulders. Miss Liberty, after a gentle but firm conversation about cooperation, has moo'ed her commitment to fully participate this year. For those of you who may not know or remember,  Miss Liberty chose to shat before and after the event in the trailer but not during the event as was the plan. Cider Day's vendors have been very generous and we are planning on a GRAND PRIZE and a couple of runner up's as well. We are deciding if the runner up prizes should be decided by plop proximity or a random draw. If you have an opinion reach out and let us know at mhcavt@gmail.com. The MHCA Board of Directors  Ludlow Rotary Prepares for 31st Annual Chili Cookoff with Call to Area Chefs   The Ludlow Rotary Club (LRC) is sponsoring its 31st Annual Chili Cook-off on Saturday, October 8, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  The cook-off will be located at the traffic light on Depot Street.  Proceeds will benefit the Ludlow Rotary Charitable Fund to enable the LRC to continue its programs of local support.      According to cookoff chairman, Kevin Barnes, the LRC will welcome Chili entries from individuals, clubs, and businesses.  There is a $10.00 entry fee. Participants will be provided with a table, ladle, and sterno. Participants are responsible for dropping off their heated chili between 10:30 and 10:45 a.m. the day of the cook-off. Each entry is requested to provide four to five gallons of their chili. The Ludlow Rotary will provide the servers if you can't attend, so even if you can't be there, your chili can still win cash and recognition!   Plaques and three cash prizes will be awarded in the "People's Choice" category. 1st Place will receive $ 200.00 2nd Place will receive $ 100.00 3rd Place will receive $ 50.00 Plaques will be awarded to the Chili with the most votes in the Judges Choice, Spiciest and Team Spirit categories. Unless arranged otherwise, participants should deliver their heated chili by 10:45 a.m., prepare for set up and ready to serve at 11 a.m.   If you can't make chili, you still can support our fundraising effort as a sponsor for $75. Sponsors receive up to two free admissions or a free participation entry.    Please mail your name, address and phone number along with chili entry fee of $10.00 to:  Ludlow Area Rotary Charitable Fund, Inc. PO Box 216, Ludlow, VT  05149.    For more info, contact Kevin Barnes at 802-558-0479 or ludlowrotary@gmail.com.   FOLA Begins Robin Williams Film Series Sept. 17 with "Moscow on the Hudson"   FOLA will begin its three-part series of films showcasing the comedic and dramatic talents of Robin Williams on Saturday, September 17 at 6 pm with the screening of Williams' comedic hit, "Moscow on the Hudson".   The event will begin with film historian, Rick Winston, speaking on Williams' background with specific reference to the three films in the series.  Following this, refreshments will be offered.  The film will begin at 7 pm.   Moscow on the Hudson is a 1984 American romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Paul Mazursky which stars Robin Williams as a Soviet circus musician who defects while on a visit to the United States. It co-stars María Conchita Alonso (in her film debut), Elya Baskin as the circus clown, Savely Kramarov as one of two KGB apparatchiks, Alejandro Rey as the musician's immigration attorney, and Cleavant Derricks as his first American host and friend.   Vladimir Ivanoff, a saxophonist with the Moscow circus, lives in a crowded apartment with his extended family. He stands in lines for hours to buy toilet paper and shoes.   His circus troupe is sent to perform in New York City. His friend, Anatoly, who has talked of little else but defecting, can't bring himself to go through with it; and Vladimir, who had opposed the scheme as reckless and foolhardy, suddenly decides to do it. He runs from his Soviet controllers and hides behind a perfume counter at Bloomingdale's under the skirt of the clerk, Lucia Lombardo. The Plumb Bobs have created a folk/rock/eclectic sound that is all their own.  Enjoy a mix of songs you have heard, and songs you may not have heard… but will want to hear again!
