ANNUAL PHINEAS GAGE WALK AND TALK
Horrible accident. Phineas P. Gage, a foreman on the Rutland Railroads at Cavendish, VT was preparing for a blast on Wednesday last, when the powder exploded, carrying through his head an iron instrument, an inch and a fourth in circumference, and three feet and eight inches in length. The iron entered on the side of his face, shattering the upper jaw, and passing back of the left eye, and out the top of his head. Singularly enough, he was alive at two o'clock the next afternoon, in full possession of his reason, and free from pain.
This is how the Boston Courier and the Boston Daily Journal described Cavendish's famous accident that occurred on Sept. 13, 1848
On October 3, 1848, a letter by A. Angier of Cavendish, VT, appeared in the Christian Reflector and Christian Watchman. Describing the accident in more detail, it ends with the following comments, "Altogether, it is one of the strangest occurrences on record, and will form a subject of inquiry for the learned physiologist. We live in an eventful era, but if a man can have thirteen pounds of iron in the shape of a pointed bar, thrown entirely through his head, carrying with it a quantity of the brain, and yet live and have his senses, we may well exclaim, What next?
On Sunday, September 11, the Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) will be exploring the "what next" at their annual Phineas Gage Walk and Talk. The "talk" portion begins at the CHS Museum (Route 131, 1955 Main St. Cavendish) at 2 pm. This will be immediately followed by the walk to the site of the accident, ¾ of a mile from the Museum. Ludlow, VT: As Autumn sets in and school starts for another exciting year, the Expeditionary School at Black River is delighted to share upcoming events for the Fall (aside from opening for the 3rd year running!).
ESBR is currently selling raffle tickets to aid the Helicopter Golf Ball Drop for the A.C.T benefit golf tournament on Thursday, September 15th. A portion of these proceeds will be donated to ESBR for continued operational costs, and the remainder continue to support A.C.T and the families they serve. Secondly, as previously announced, on Saturday, September 17th, the 3rd Annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction will be held from 5pm-8pm at Jackson Gore's Roundhouse. For the first time this year, the Silent Auction will be available online as well. Both guests and those who may not be able to attend in person are welcome to bid online for items, which include a Burton Snowboard, Manship custom jewelry, Red Sox Tickets, 2023 Fox Run Golf Club Membership, trip to Spain, and many wonderful crafts and gift certificates from local businesses. Lastly, ESBR is honored to again be attending the Ludlow Harvest Fair on Saturday, October 1st. Located on the ESBR front lawn and hosted by the Ludlow Elementary School's PTG, it is a long-standing tradition presented by LES every Fall. The PTG does a tremendous job organizing the event. Many talented artisans attend with their beautiful designs. Delicious food is also always close at hand, be it a skilled vendor or the PTG's bake sale at the venue. And ESBR will provide games and arts & crafts for kids.
Please join us for these events. They not only provide operational funding, they also support the community, of which we owe so much gratitude to. The journey is far from over, but we've accomplished so much with the help of the families and dedicated community members. We look forward to seeing everyone at these upcoming events.

Happy Labor Day Weekend!
Labor day weekend is here! Kids are back in school. The weather is cooler. Summer seems to be winding down.
We've been working around the farm, the hayfields, and even the farm house! Getting things done and settled before winter sets in, because it will be here sooner than we think!
Our farm stand is open through Sunday for your shopping convenience. Honey, salsas, mustards, coffee, maple, meat, dairy, veggies, baked goods, gifts and so much more. Our meat coolers are stocked with chops, sausage, ham, bacon, roasts, steaks, stew beef, short ribs and ground beef. We can certainly help you decided what's for dinner!
Let's dust off our slow cookers! Cooler weather and slow cookers are my favs! On the beef side, try our chuck roasts, briskets or stew beef. Let 'em cook all day for a delicious dinner. Or try a pork shoulder or ham hock. You really can't go wrong.
And don't forget we get sweet corn, fresh breads, and baked goods on Saturday! We can't wait to see you.

As summer traffic and haying season continues, please be mindful of hay equipment, grandkids, vehicles and customers when driving in and out of our driveway.
