Adult S/M Price: $50 Kristin tkvey@vermontel.net dedicated to providing a local alternative to commercially produced factory food   This 'n That What a week!  Thank you everyone who took time to stop by our farm stand last weekend and during the week.  We saw so many folks.  Got to chat with a few, meet some visitors, and share recipes and grandkid stories with others.  Our haying season ended yesterday and ended with a bang!  We stacked 825 bales, filling our barn with feed for the winter.  Such a good feeling.  All told, 12,500 square bales and 530 round bales were put up during our season.  We still have a few turkeys available for Thanksgiving.  Turkeys generally average 18lbs, and will be $6.00/lb.  Email today to reserve yours.  A $25 deposit is required. Our farm stand will be ready for you this weekend.  Fresh bread, pastries, and locally grown produce.  And the grandkids are selling pumpkins as well!  Don't forget the maple, and the gift giving season that is right around the corner!  We've got maple syrup, maple almonds and some delicious maple cream. Our chickens were a big seller this past week, and that must mean you folks are heading into comfort food season!  Nothing like a roast chicken dinner, am I right?!  Stop on by and get yours this weekend.   Our farm stand is located at 1966 Healdville Road in Mount Holly.  Please be cautious and drive accordingly when driving in and out of our driveway.  Be on the lookout for farm equipment, dogs, other customers, and  grandchildren!  FARM STAND UPDATED HOURS   As we head into the fall and winter season, we are adjusting our farm stand hours.  Effective October 18th, we will be closed on Mondays. They are dusty but there is no damage - I just need the space. Tables are plastic and fiberglass. Need a good cleaning and have some chips along the edges but are not cracked or broken. They are available for the next week or so on the side of the road at 1376 Summit Rd near the train tracks. The festivities of Cider Days were in full swing and the place was hopping.  Anticipation was high and that morning the remaining contest squares went like hot cakes. Vendors filled our prize basket with all kinds of goodies sweetening the prize pot. By noon (two hours into said festivities) we had already sold 20 dozen doughnuts! Miss Liberty arrived at 1pm, it was an overcast and somewhat chilly afternoon. Anticipation was high - who's piece of temporary real-estate will she make her deposit on???? Team Johnson (Jim, Millicent, and retired Marine son Jeremiah) steadfastly watched over her as visitors meandered by and chatted about her beauty, eating and, of course, pooping habits. The younger crowd definitely loved seeing her; although truth be told most of the adults seemed equally captivated by her golden jersey figure. Has she pooped? Has she pooped was a constant refrain amongst the crowd. Up and down the hilly road we walked checking on her status. Two o'clock - nuthin. Three o'clock waiting waiting waiting. The Mrs. (in Team Johnson) decided apples might help prompt Miss Liberty's digestive expression. "Are you sure Miss Liberty is gonna poop" we asked - "oh yes, she will" replied Mrs. Johnson. At four o'clock still no poop and Mr Smith arrives to trailer her home. The trailer is opened and what do we find....low and behold Miss Liberty pooped on her way to the contest, no wonder we have not had any "plop activity". So despite munching endlessly for 3 hours and having four apples she did not poop during our designated event time. One may ask "can one have a designated pooping window for a cow?" But wait....we have to have a prize winner, oh what to do?  After a quick brainstorming session with Team Johnson, a few dozen bystanders and 2 head organizers of Cider Days from the Mount Holly Community Association the decision was made to get a shovel full of poop, blindfold Jeremiah, turn him around until he is completely disoriented and hand him the shovel full of poop to be launched. Facing backwards the retired Marine catapulted the poop high in the air. It spun and twirled as it decended into a grand splat. Jeremiah Johnson excitedly removed his blindfold and with the quickness of a trained soldier went into measuring mode. The determination was then made the flying poop landed in square was D5. DRUM ROLL please..............the winner was a Mr. Patrick Devine! As Miss Liberty was gently guided back into the trailer she sauntered up the ramp entered the trailer gave us a backward glance and with a smirk on her face once again shat in the trailer. And that is the story of the MHCA first annual cow plop contest. It was a team effort in making this event successful. Thank you Ryan Smith for the transporting Miss Liberty; Team Johnson from Dairy Aire Farm for sharing Miss Liberty; and Donna DiAngelis for the use of your property/signage/cow flags! Sleepy Hollow is a 1999 American gothic supernatural horror film directed by Tim Burton. It is a film adaptation loosely based on Washington Irving's 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", and stars Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci,. The plot follows police constable Ichabod Crane (Depp) sent from New York City to investigate a series of murders in the village of Sleepy Hollow by a mysterious Headless Horseman. Crane, criticized for his favoritism of scientific methods, is dispatched to the upstate Dutch hamlet of Sleepy Hollow, which has been plagued by a series of brutal decapitations: a wealthy father and son, Peter and Dirk Van Garrett, and a widow, Emily Winship. Received by the insular town elders—wealthy businessman Baltus Van Tassel, town doctor Thomas Lancaster, the Reverend Steenwyck, notary James Hardenbrook, and magistrate Samuel Philipse—Ichabod learns that locals believe the killer is the undead apparition of a headless Hessian mercenary from the American Revolutionary War who rides a black steed in search of his missing head.  Ichabod begins his investigation, skeptical of the paranormal story.  What follows is the tale of how Crane investigates the crimes of the alleged headless horseman.   It is told in a vivid, yet often humorous, manner as only Director Burton can imagine and portray. The film, rated R for its vivid depiction of the headless horseman's actions and a sexual scene, was awarded the Academy Award for Scenic Design.  The director and lead actors in the movie were also nominated for Academy Awards. West wind 3 to 7 mph.   Archived Newsflash emails can be read at: https://mthollynewsflash.blogspot.com For Immediate Release Contact: ralphcpace@gmail.com Note:  Large number of photos attached   Large Number of Tasters Drawn to Ludlow Rotary Chili Cook-Off   Whether it was the peak of the foliage season, the lure of a non-Covid event, or the aroma of multiple chilis in the autumn air, an exceptionally large number of the area residents and visitors made their way through the 25 plus chili offerings of the Ludlow Rotary Club's 30th annual Chili Cook-Off.   LRC President Art Randolph summed up the response to the cook-off saying, "Our 30th Annual Chili Cook-Off was a resounding success with a record-breaking number of contestants and visitors, all made possible, thanks to the many volunteers under the leadership of event Co-Chairs Kevin Barnes and Scott Murphy."  According to event co-chairman, Kevin Barnes, "We always know our chili cook-off will attract people, but we never expected such a large number of active tasters as we saw this Saturday".   The size of anxious participants was clear from observations by Rotarian David Almond, one of the gate keepers for the cook-off, who noted, " The people wanting to take part in the event were standing in lines from Depot Street to Berkshire Bank and down to DJs.  We had prepared a very large number of brochures and expected them to be adequate for the entire event, but halfway through we had to prepare more on an emergency basis".   Two forms of awards were made to the chili providers, one by a panel of three judges and a second by votes made by the tasters.   The panel of judges, consisting of Alice Nitka, Anthony Segreto, and Logan Nicoll.  Best : Birds Nest Chili by Shelli Steinfeld Spicy: Chernobyl Chili by BR Mechanical Services Team Spirit: RV Tech Center Culinary   Votes cast by the cook-off "tasters" selected the following chili providers: 1st Place: Bird's Nest Chili by Shelli Steinfeld 2nd Place: Lone Star Chili by Todd Patane 3rd Place: Big Chonga Chili by Sam's Restaurant 4th Place (tie)Honorable Mention: Firehouse Chili by Ludlow FD Ludlow's Monster Buck by Marissa Tanner   Kim Lampert, LRC's Treasurer, enthusiastically added, "Thanks to all our sponsors of this event.  See you at the 31st Annual event – always held the Saturday of Columbus Day weekend.   Proceeds this year went to the Ludlow Rotary Charitable Fund.
